Good Review of the Fundamentals

I purchased this book in order to prepare for a paramedic class that I'll be attending this fall. The book, while several pages long, provides great detail for those who have no previous knowledge in pharmacology. While it is easy to read and understand, you may want to allow at least a month or two in order to understand most of the aspects it discusses. The book may provide more information than is necessary in order to prepare for a paramedic course but it is still provides a great resource to come back.

Finally, a serious and useful book that addresses a very real behavioral problem

Many women-and also men-are all but addicted to rescuing or saving others. Among my clients rescuing can take many forms, from "saving" people they date to the more subtle forms of inappropriate mentoring or favoring certain students in the classroom. The irony of rescuing is it seems to be good for everyone. But it rarely works the way it does in childhood dreams. Many of these rescuers eventually damage and even ruin their own lives and those of others while attempting their saving deeds. Results are often extraordinary stressful, sometimes tragic, with occasionally dramatic, even violent conclusions.

Counselors and clinicians have known this for years. However, too often they have lacked the language and techniques to do much about this widespread problem. The White Knight Syndrome is the first realistic account that suggests concrete solutions for the too common problems or rescuers and their intended targets.

A strength of this book is that it recognizes that there are diverse motives that give rise to rescuing behaviors. Most are rooted in early childhood experiences and involves a coping style characterized by excessive altruism as at "deserving" people. These rescuers are not just "People who love too much" but "People who love the wrong people too much". Typically these rescuing feelings arise in response to childhood traumas, bullying, feelings of inadequacy, abandonment, or insecurities. Yet rescuing rarely work successfully and has a host of difficulties when applied to complex adult situations.

The authors suggest that as an alternative the rescuer needs to learn new strategies to move forward in life. They can learn to love positive aspects of themselves. rejecting the negative and irrational ones. They can recognize their patterns and then open up to the facts that they might be projecting personality aspects onto current relationships. Finally, although rescuers may always have some of these "saving" tendencies, they can learn to be more balanced and ultimately happier and less destructive with love and life.

Does this approach work? Well, as a therapist I have recommended this book over 14 times and received 14 positive feedbacks. To me that says something. The statistician/researcher side of me could find lots of problems with the previous sentence but it is enough for me to keep recommending The White Knight Syndrome. I've also recommended it to acquaintances who uniformly have said, "You know that book really helped me a lot!" To me that shows that Lamia and Krieger are onto something useful, powerful, and effective.

i needed this book at a crossroad in my life

This review is being written with Siri. Apologies for any typos. I literally could not put this book down. A friend of mine recommended that I read it because he thought it would help me. This book has helped me realize why I have made some of the choices that I have made in past relationships, subconsciously. Even if you don't suspect that you are a white night, this would be a good treat. I found this book after a girl that I dated for about four months Broke it off with me because our relationship was too much work. She demonstrated a willingness to break up with me. I could not understand how she could break up with someone who had so many amazing qualities, the qualities that I possess. I realized after reading this book that I presented a magnified version of myself to her. When she started to discover the actual me, or the Real me, she decided to split. The truth is the girl that I was dating really wasn't someone that I wanted to be with. But I could not bear hurting her. So I sacrificed my own health to create what I thought was happiness for her. After analyzing my relationship with my recent breakup, I started to think about why my past relationships have failed. And about a quarter through this book I realize that I typically date women who are younger than me. Subconsciously I made this choice to compensate For the shame that I have developed as a child. My father was never around. I was a late bloomer. I got cut from the basketball team as a child. And it goes on and on. These are the kinds of things you think about when you read this book. It's great for self animalization and great for personal growth.

A solid self-help tool

This book was very helpful!! It helped me understand not only why I attempt to save others, but it also defined my particular type of "white knight". What the author calls a white knight is also known as codependency. I didn't know that there were different types of "white knights" or co-dependants, and that alone was worth the price. In addition, having a clearer understanding of my own motivations has been helping me to focus more on myself and less on others, which for empathetic types, is a great accomplishment. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five, because I wanted to read more about my "type" of white knight, and the readings on the other types were not as helpful and took up a great deal of the book. The author might want to consider developing books for each of the typified knights.

About the Author
Jeffrey Wolf Green has been called the founder of Evolutionary Astrology because he first started to lecture on the revolutionary astrological paradigm in 1977 after receiving a dream from the spiritual master Swami Sri Yukteswar, Paramahansa Yogananda’s guru. In that dream the entire paradigm of Evolutionary Astrology was conveyed to Jeffrey. This was the first time in astrology’s long history that a specific paradigm was realized that allowed for an understanding of the evolutionary progression of a Soul from life to life. Jeffrey lectured all over the world on Evolutionary Astrology from 1977 to 2001. He established Evolutionary Astrology schools in a number of countries and wrote three books on Evolutionary Astrology. The first of these, Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, volume one was published in 1984. It has been in continuous print ever since and has become one of the all time best selling astrology books. Translations have been made into French, German, Dutch, Chinese, Bulgarian, Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages. The second volume, Pluto: The Soul’s Evolution through Relationships was published in 1998 and has been in continuous print. A third volume, Essays in Evolutionary Astrology: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, was published in 2010. Essays was compiled by his daughter Deva Green from transcriptions of workshops Jeffrey gave over the years. It covers topics that are part of Jeffrey’s Evolutionary Astrology paradigm that were either not covered in depth or in some cases at all in his original two volumes. Since starting his original Pluto School in 1994, Jeffrey had many EA students, a number of whom are now professional EA astrologers. He personally counseled over 30,000 clients in his lengthy career. This exposure to so many Souls from so many different backgrounds and orientations allowed him to come to the deepest possible understandings of the nature of the Soul. He communicated these insights through all of his teachings. In 2008 his daughter Deva Green, took over her father’s work. She established the Jeffrey Wolf Green School of Evolutionary Astrology website, and created the EA School’s Evolutionary Astrology Council who assist Deva with the School’s mission of disseminating Jeffrey’s original work around the planet.

As translation and adaptation practices are an integral part of global cultural and political activities and agendas, it is ever more important to study such occurrences of rewriting and reshaping. By exploring and investigating interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives and approaches, this volume investigates the impact such occurrences of rewriting have on the constructions and experiences of cultures while at the same time developing a rigorous methodological framework which will form the basis of future scholarship on performance and film, translation and adaptation.

Few books on statistical data analysis in the natural sciences are written at a level that a non-statistician will easily understand. This is a book written in colloquial language, avoiding mathematical formulae as much as possible, trying to explain statistical methods using examples and graphics instead.�To use the book efficiently, readers should have some computer experience. The book starts with the simplest of statistical concepts and carries readers forward to a deeper and more extensive understanding of the use of statistics in environmental sciences. The book concerns the application of statistical and other computer methods to the management, analysis and display of spatial data. These data are characterised by including locations (geographic coordinates), which leads to the necessity of using maps to display the data and the results of the statistical methods. Although the book uses examples from applied geochemistry, and a large geochemical survey in particular, the principles and ideas equally well apply to other natural sciences, e.g., environmental sciences, pedology, hydrology, geography, forestry, ecology, and health sciences/epidemiology.

The book is unique because it supplies direct access to software solutions (based on R, the Open Source version of the S-language for statistics) for applied environmental statistics. For all graphics and tables presented in the book, the R-scripts are provided in the form of executable R-scripts. In addition, a graphical user interface for R, called DAS+R, was developed for convenient, fast and interactive data analysis.

About the Author
Clemens Reiman (born 1952) holds an M.Sc. in Mineralogy and Petrology from the University of Hamburg (Germany), a Ph.D. in Geosciences from Leoben Mining University, Austria, and a D.Sc. in Applied Geochemistry from the same university. he has worked as a lecturer in Mineralogy and Petrology and Environmental Sciences at Leoben Mining University, as an exploration geochemist in eastern Canada, in contract research in environmental sciences in Austria and managed the laboratory of an Austrian cement company before joining the Geological Survey of Norway in 1991 as a senior geochemist. From March to October 2004 he was director and professor at the German Federal Environment Agency (Unweltbundesamt, UBAS), responsible for the Division II, Environmental Health and Protection of Ecosystems. At present he is chairman of the EuroGeoSurveys geochemistry expert group, acting vice president of the International Association of GeoChemistry (IAGC), and associate editor of both Applied Geochemistry and Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis.

Peter Filzmoser (born 1968) studies Applied Mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, where he also wrote his doctoral thesis and habilitation devoted to the field of multivariate statistics. His research led him to the area of robust statistics, resulting in many international collaborations and various scientific papers in this area. His interest in applications of robust methods resulted in the development of R software packages. He was and is involved in the Organisation of several scientific evens devoted to robust statistics. Since 2001 he has been dozent at the Statistics Department at Vienna University of Technology. He was visiting professor at the universities of Vienna, Toulouse and Minsk.

Robert G. Garrett (Bob Garrett) studied Mining Geology and Applied Geochemistry at Imperial College, London, and joined the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in 1967 following post-doctoral studies at Northwestern University, Evanston. For the next 25 years his activities focused on regional geochemical mapping in Canada, and overseas for the Canadian International Development Agency, to support mineral exploration and resource appraisal. Throughout his work there has been a use of computers and statistics to manage data, assess their quality, and maximise the knowledge extracted from them. In the 1990s he commenced collaboration crops. Since then he has been involved in various Canadian Federal and university-based research initiatives aimed at providing sound science to support Canadian regulatory and international policy activities concerning risk assessments and risk management for metals. he retired in March 2005 but remains active as an Emeritus Scientist.

Rudolf Dutter is senior statistician and full professor at Vienna University of Technology, Austria. he studies Applied Mathematics in Vienna (M.Sc.) and Statistics at Universite de Montreal, Canada (Ph.D.). He spent three years as a post-doctoral fellow at ETH, Zurich, working on computational robust statistics. research and teaching activities followed at the Graz University of Technology, and as a full professor of statistics at Vienna University of Technology, both in Austria. he also taught and consulted at Leoben Mining University, Technology, both in Austria. he also taught and consulted at Leoben Mining University, Austria; currently he consults in many fields of applied statistics with main interests in computational and robust statistics, development of statistical software, and geostatistics. He is author and coauthor of many publications and several books, e.g., an early booklet in German on geostatistics.
