About the Author
Warren F. Walker, Jr., is Emeritus Professor at Oberlin College, where he taught for 38 years after taking a Harvard doctorate. Well known for his articles on reptile anatomy and locomotion, Dr. Walker is the author of seven laboratory manuals and textbooks published in over 30 editions and in several translations. In addition to being the coauthor of Vertebrate Dissection, Dr. Walker is also coauthor of the Brooks/Cole title FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF THE VERTEBRATES, Third Edition by Liem/Bemis/Walker/Grande.

Anatomy of a textbook

Students already familiar with vertebrate anatomy will probably find this a useful reference, however students who are learning about vertebrate anatomy for the first time will likely be a bit frustrated with the book. Often, long wordy paragraphs describe structures rather than having an emphasis on diagrams. Material and terminology is frequently introduced without stating function or relevance until later on. Diagrams are only in a few different colors and usually lack spatial depth, which I personally found difficult for understanding the 3 dimensional layout of many oddly shaped structures. There are no photographs making identification of real life structures a bit of a challenge. There is also the occasional mislabeled diagram, but those are likely being remedied in the next edition.

I'm a bit disappointed at the organization of this book and it's emphasis on descriptions via text, however it is useful once you gain a good understanding of the material. The text goes into a nice amount of detail and covers a lot of material. However, if I had a choice of textbooks to use form my anatomy course, I would likely look at something else.

Comprehensive and clear

This book is well-organized and clearly written, and includes some truly fascinating revelations about the vertebrates, especially relating to biomechanics. It is, however, really too encyclopedic for undergraduates to read cover to cover. As a supplement to a lecture course, I find it excellent; if the lecturer expects students to learn most of the material from the text alone, they are in for a difficult time. The main difficulty is that the most important material is not necessarily emphasized in the text, so that the instructor using this text must be clear about what main points students need. As a reference for further study after class, and to look up things not understood the first time, this book is great. As a primary teaching tool with no outline or emphasis to guide study, there is simply far too much information for a one-semester undergraduate course.

Very well written book that helps take the reader through the evolutionary history of vertebrates. Figures are no longer completely up to date with the latest research, but still a quality reference book. Be ready to be bogged down with details.

THE DEFINITIVE, UNBEATABLE, STUPENDOUS and VEGAN APPROVED COOKIEBOOK

The best, most affordable, and most accessible cookie recipes anywhere, whether you're vegan or not.

Astound your friends! Convert the devoted carnists (or just don't tell them) and slowly save the world from the cruelty inherent in egg and dairy production.

Seriously these cookies are amazing. My favorites are the coffee laced one, the chewy spiced one, and the banana one. Chocolate chip recipes are good too, but since opinions vary soo widely on what the optimal chocolate chip cookie looks, feels, smells and tastes like, you'll have to experiment to get them the way you want.

The gluten free chocolate chip recipe is actually pretty sweet. The no-bakes are too convenient also, you can make them in a rice cooker with zero effort every day and will get hella fat if you don't heed this warning!

TWO IMPORTANT TECHNIQUES NOT TOUCHED UPON IN DETAIL
No omissions, these, both are relatively recent knowledge to the general cooking public, and would be undue stress and complication to place on novice bakers:
1) If you mix up your dough the day before, let it sit in a tupperware overnight in the fridge, magic happens. Something about the flour being ableto uptake more of the oils and liquids, you get caramelization of the not-raw-sugar carbohydrates or something and somehow the flavor profile gets much more broad and all the main notes go deeper. Seems to improve texture too! I'm not sure why the rest time doesn't kill the leavening agents but it doesn't, though the rise *is* affected and you may have to compensate.
I do this with every recipe I have the patience for, it is truly the only way to make next-level cookies. Remember, with no eggs or dairy, risk of spoilage is basically nil over a day's time.
2) A newfangled but *extremely* effective and versatile vegan-egg-replacement is "aquafaba." Don't shoot me, but it is most simply described as the watery solution that comes with the garbanzo beans in a can of garbanzo beans. It works, I prose you, about 2-3Tbsp of that stuff per "egg" called for. Depending on how much it has been reduced from water to the thicker brine, you may have to adjust the final moisture content a bit. You can also make your own by making your own beans, though I have found it difficult to get the viscosity and behavior quite where it wants to be.

But, if you use it as directed, aquafaba is the best egg-sub around. My opinion, but you can look it up, and if you try it I bet you'll agree. So easy!

Looking for an easy read and I found a gem !!!

I was looking for an easy read for yesterday night, so I looked at the new releases. I was first attracted by the title and cover of this book, and the synopsis was fine too. I was expecting the kind of book that helps anyone fall asleep quickly at night. When I started reading it I was surprised I found an amazing insightful story. A book with well developed characters. It recreates the taste of the ocean and the view of an idyllic place I'd like to live in. The story is also entertaining and fun so I couldn't stop reading it for hours.

I give 5 stars to this book because it really surprised me, I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with Juli and I laughed with many of the secondary characters and the situations. Kudos to the writer for this little gem.

By the way, it's a pleasure to be the first reviewer of this book!

Beautifully written feel-good love story

The Post Girl is a beautifully written, feel-good love story. I fell in love right away with its main character, Juli, a charming and bubbly Post Girl who is secretly pining for Eric, an intriguing and talented writer she meets on her Coronado Island route. The story alternates between Eric's and Juli's point of view, which will make you smile at their succession of hapless misunderstandings and at the same time realize that they are clearly made for each other. I found myself rooting for them from the first page and thrilled to see them get their very well deserved happy ending. If you want a contemporary and delightful Post Girl meets shy writer boy story, sweet, charming and utterly romantic, the Post Girl will not disappoint you!

Now I have to go

Now I have to go to Coronado Island. I loved the characters of this book so much, that I have to retrace the post girl’s steps on this island off San Diego. I want to walk the postal route featured in the book, and I want to check out the cool mansion where so many things happened – I wonder if they offer tours.
I’m especially happy to have found an up-and-coming author, with such an amazing debut novel. How can someone write such a good book as their first – it gets you immersed into the romantic story right from the start. It’s got the qualities of a fine novel – events and dialogues distilled and flowing into a superb narrative; characters very much likeable even if imperfect, and relationships serving as good inspiration to aspire to in my own life.
I need to veer off of my usual nonfiction reading more often – fiction means a good vacation in the nonfictional existence of a common geek like me.

Good Research -- Antidote to Romantic Illusions

Let me recommend this quite readable and appropriately titled book to anyone who desires to become acquainted with some real, documented, quantified, substantive research about the history of trans-Mississippi Indian captivities, while simultaneously getting a much-needed injection of hardcore historical reality to counter the plethora of romantic, sentimental, and "politically correct" nonsense that burdens the shelves of contemporary bookstores.

With hardly any exceptions (aside from the extraordinary case of Cynthia Ann Parker, and perhaps a handful of others), it appears that being captured by Indians (especially if you were a female who had either approached or attained the age of puberty, and you were not otherwise too old or ugly!) amounted to a truly grim ordeal -- literally "a fate worse than death". And, most captives, who were apparently abused day and night (beaten, raped, starved, and tortured) and treated like dirty slaves, were more than eager to return to "civilization" when they had an opportunity. It all makes you suspect that the all too common notions of being taken captive and learning to cherish the wild and free life among the "noble savages" are, for the most part, romantic illusions, and that characters (such as the Caucasian woman who lived with the Souix as an adopted member of the tribe in "Dances With Wolves" -- by the way, a movie I really enjoyed) bear little resemblance to the harsh reality.

Beyond all that, the research presented in this book by the Michnos brings to light the sheer scope and scale of the Indian captivity problem that once prevailed out West. Apparently, many hundreds, and even thousands, of settlers either directly experienced or lived in fear of such an eventuality.

Thorough but too heavy in critical criminology

This book is thorough and can be used as a text book in several classes. It does an excellent job of putting the theories in historical context. However, there are critical criminology beliefs sprinkled throughout the book in the guise of objectivity.

Excellent text!

I am finding this text to be excellent. It is fairly well written and as understandable as I expect a text of this nature. According to my professor it is the best criminology textbook written in the English language. I will be keeping this text after my class is finished, as a reference. Interesting chapter on history of crime as well (I was afraid that chapter would be boring).

Good book, bad delivery.

I tend to do 3 Stars for a great product and 2 more for great service and delivery. This book is great (I assume since our teacher loves it), but I was more than disappointed with my delivery.
I placed this order (I believe) on the 4th, and put one day shipping that I paid an absurd amount extra for, so I could get this book for my upcoming test on the 10th. More than enough time.
Not really.
Sure, it did get here in one day after it shipped, but the problem is I ordered it on the 4th and it didn't ship until the 10th. So I didn't get to even look at the book before my test.
I still got an 85, but blah. Now I have to do extra credit.
But really, good book. Just order it plenty before you need it.
