About the Author
David W. Gill (Ph.D., USC) is an ethics writer, educator and consultant. He served as professor of Christian ethics at New College Berkeley (1978-1990) and professor of applied ethics at North Park University (1992-2001). As an adjunct or visiting professor, he teaches Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary and Regent College, and business ethics in MBA programs at University of San Francisco, and Seattle Pacific University. He is also the Director of the Mockler Center for Faith & Ethics in the Workplace at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, Society of Business Ethics, and Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. He is president of the International Jacques Ellul Society.
Gill has written or edited six books, including the two-volume introduction to Christian ethics, Becoming Good: Building Moral Character (2000) and Doing Right: Practicing Ethical Principles (2004). He often leads workshops, seminars and retreats for Christian students, faculty, professional and church groups, and he provides business ethics training and consulting services in the marketplace.

refreshing our cultural browser

I have been through this book several times now. Once I raced through it because I had to (course requirement). Once because I wanted to understand the material and the author's POV. Then, finally (and slowly), as I taught the material.

Ethics as a part of successful living is what David Gill does and this is his manual. His voice is dynamic, inspiring and equally challenging. There is no easy way to work through the Ten Commandments. One has to listen and be ready to take in all that they are. The upside of "Doing Right" is that Gill vigorously points out all that they aren't. As a people, we have pushed Exodus 20 into the realm of myth, fantasy and courtroom placards. Gill refreshes our cultural browser with his intriguing perspective and practiced contemplation of what "doing right" looks like in the 21st century.

What is more...Gill's knowledge and influence is not confined to America's latest and greatest theological brain trust. He will introduce you to European ethicists, Rabbinic teachings and a whole spectrum of voices who have thought, written, spoken and actively pursued the practice of ethical principles.

If you are looking to enrich your understanding of the Living Ethic informed through the Ten Commandments, this is your book. If you want to undertake an intentional personal journey into the land of right living, think of this as your map.

It's accessible, quotable, teachable and will do nothing short of jump starting much needed transformation, if you are wiling to do the work.

*** It is the contention of many, even many "good" people, in the post modern world that the Decalouge, the Ten Commandments, is outdated, written in a time when there was less grey area in life than there is now. Perhaps those contenders merely need the Ten Words of God to be explained to them a bit better. By taking each of them and expanding upon it to illuminate the meaning how it relates specifically to the modern world with its varigated problems that no one in the Pre Christian Sinai wilderness could have imagine, the author proves that the law of Moses is as timeless and relevant as it ever was- perhaps even more so. ***

About the Author
Robert K. Cooper is an independent scholar who has spent more than twenty years researching leadership, health science, transformational change, and organizational effectiveness. Emotions are a good thing....

Reading through this book, I found myself repeatedly saying, "yes, that's exactly how I feel", or "ha! that's the way things ought to be.". This book clearly indicates what is wrong with the work culture of today. It also explains why, despite making good money, people still feel unsatisfied or incomplete. It gives you a good understanding of how to be a more complete and honest person/employee/manager. A must read for all those who are caught up in today's "intellectual and rationality first" work culture. A must read for all those who feel they are doing good, challenging, rewarding work and yet feel an immense sense of emptiness/hopelessness. Damn good book.....!

Most Practical Management Book I have ever read

Robert Cooper's book is heads above all the other enmotional intelligence books on the market. The others empahasize to much theory. This author is heavy on practical proven approaches that are based on people be authentic with one another and working together. Granted this book may not be for those who don't have the guts to push themelves to grow to heights not even mentioned in typical management theories. Honesty, putting the customer first, being genuinine, etc... have all but become extinct today. Robert Cooper's book issue's a challenge to all of us. To be the best means competing against your own standards so you can best serve your customers first and making a profit helps you do that better. Bravo Dr. Cooper.

Excellent book with tools to measure EQ and apply every day

Warning: This review could be biased as I reviewed the manuscript for authors before it was published.
Executive EQ addresses some of the questions I had when I completed reading Goleman's book on Emotional Intelligence (EI). I learned that EI could be increased but how? What practical suggestions can I give my clients? While I love the philosophy and theory behind it, my clients who are executives in Forture 500 companies sometimes need tools and process steps. Executive EQ did address many questions about the application of EI in business and integrated it with philosophical anecdotes leaving me with deeper insights. This book also validates and legitimizes some of the practices leaders already use like use of intuition in decision making. The book is organized into four cornerstones with each section divided into very readable four chapters and each chapter flowing nicely from one to another. Overall, I am quite impressed and recommend it highly to business executives. I bought 10 copies and gave to my clients and so far every one of them liked the book!
EQ Map (enclosed in the book) is an effective tool to measure where one stands and I am glad that it is not a number like IQ. I did find out that there is a more refined version of EQ is available through Q-Metrics and am looking forward to using this instrument with my clients.

A great textbook

In this updated version of Timoshenko's classical vibration book, it seems Weaver's role is generally bounded by only rearranging the topics to a more clear form that makes the book easier to read. Though he introduced some numerical techniques, especially for nonlinear systems and a new chapter on the finite element formulation of vibration problems, these can't be considered as noticeable additions. An introduction covering a historical review and telling the "meaning" and "results" of vibration is still missing and the exclusion of some topics, which were taking place in the previous prints, is a great fault. The writer might consider them as special topics that doesn't interest the average reader (such as the vibration of ship hulls) but who can say that Lagrange's equation is a special topic? Of course all these are only little critics that can never lower the great value of this comprehensive textbook. It covers nearly all aspects of the vibration phenomenon with various examples and is a "must" for an engineering student.

Great real world reference

Vibration Problems in Engineering is a great reference book for the mechanical engineer. The print readability is not as good as modern textbooks but it contains all of the same information with real application and then some (which isn't always found in modern textbooks). It contains many specialized problems and takes an "old world" approach to problem solving. This book helped me (entry level engineer) take a different perspective of real world engineering. It is also very similar to J.P. Den Hartog's Mechanical Vibrations (even the cover!).

This is the only book you need to understand the principles of vibration.

I was a total stranger to the subject but this book helped me a lot to understand the theory of vibration. It starts with very basic concepts,then elaborates on more complex and useful analysis methods. Examples with detailed solutions provided. Problem sets are also good.

Enlightenment the easy way...

Given the success of the first volume, 'Politically Correct Bedtime Stories', James Finn Garner took another journey into fairytale land to find a revisionist's dream of reframed stories, and assembled them into the volume 'Once Upon a More Enlightened Time'. Like the first volume, this one holds nothing sacred, highlighting both the excesses of prejudice in the past while exposing the excesses of the politically correct currents of today.
Once again, the tone is set from the start in the Introduction by Garner: 'At the outset, I would like to apologise sincerely for the success of my last book. The number of trees that voicelessly gave their lives so that my resource-greedy publisher and I could meet retail demand was truly appalling, and quite likely contributed to the global warming that gave those of us in the Northern Hemisphere such an unseasonably warm winter.'
Garner misses the opportunity here to remind us of the disparity of wealth between hemispheres, but beyond that, he doesn't miss much. The titles of the stories will give you insight:
- A Politically Correct Alphabet
- Hansel and Gretel
- The Ant and the Grasshopper
- The Princess and the Pea
- The Little Mer-persun (Mer-maid is a demeaning title)
- The Tortoise and the Hare
- Puss in Boots
- Sleeping Persun of Better-than-Average Attractiveness (to call her a beauty demeans all others)
- The City Mouse and the Suburban Mouse (the countryside having been ravaged and now no longer exists close to cities; the country mouse has become suburban)
The politically correct alphabet I will list below--this gives a flavour of the rest of the text.
A is an Activity itching to fight
B is a Beast with its animal rights
C was a Cripple (now differently abled)
D is a Drunk who is 'liquor-enabled'
and so forth...
Garner hastens to add that, of course, the traditional ordering of the letters does not in any way imply that 'A' is more better or deserving a letter than X, Y, or Z.
Garner's publicity blurb says that he is called 'a master of the tour de force' by The Washington Post and 'a smart-alec, mealy-mouthed creep' by The London Daily Telegraph, yet feels the truth lies somewhere in between.
These stories will be loved by anyone who doesn't take life too seriously. Nothing is sacred here--be prepared to find something in yourself in here.

That Tortoise used Performing Enhancement Drugs

This sequel to Politically Correct Bedtime Stories introduces the reader to more politically correct fairy tales. Hansel and Gretel and the Tortoise and the Hare are my favourites. This is on par with the first book but avoid the next book in the series Politically Correct Holiday Stories as it does not live up to the standards of these two. Also read Apocalypse Wow by the same author.
Other great versions of fairytales can be found in Once Upon a Crime and the book called Whatever happened to...? The Ultimate Sequels.

Fun, but just more of the same

Given the popularity and originality of Garner's previous work, "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories," a sequel was all but inevitable. But the brilliance of that first effort was in its freshness and surprise. Now that the feline animal companion is out of the bag, another book on the same topic was bound to be disappointing.

Garner rewrites old fairy tales (Hansel and Gretel, The Little Mermaid) and fables (The Ant and the Grasshopper, the Tortoise and the Hare) to echo the sensitivities of the far, far left. He tongue-in-cheekedly uses spellings that avoid the word "man" ("persun" for "person," "wommon" for "woman,") and has his heroes and heroines (excuse me, she-roes) adopt anti-capitalist, pro-environment and pro-animal rights stances. But (sigh) it has all been done before. What Garner needed to do was to take his lampoon to a new level. He accomplishes this one time, with "Puss in Boots," a satire on the American political system, in which artful consultants spin empty-headed candidates into electoral gold.

Garner is a clever man, a skilled writer and a gifted satirist. This work is OK, but I'm anxious to see him move in new directions.

This author is very thorough and definitely knows what they're talking about. However, it did take me a while to understand certain things. After a while, I did pick it up quicker as the book was ending. However, this might have been me...Over than that, this book is great for someone who needs a brush up or someone who is trying to understand C#.

Easy To Learn

It's just amazing to learn new technologies and software programs. I've always wanted to pick up C programming as it's such a marketable course and it costs a lot of time and money to learn from a private school. So, it's great to be able to find a crash course within a book. That sure makes my job easier and the price is not steep either. There are some tips here about combining operators and doing loops, etc. You may well find it useful like in my case.

This is also an AWESOME parenting book! I bought this book and the companion activities book. I am pursuing a career in speech-language pathology and I have a two-year-old son and am always looking for ways to be a better caregiver and mother. The most valuable thing this book has to offer is how the environmental, biological, physiological and emotional aspects of child development come together to form a child as she grows. It brings a complete whole-child view to the table and helps me as a parent and future caregiver look at children with an enhanced lens of wonder and amazement at the development of all children. This book brought both a new pattern of colors to add to my kaleidoscope of childhood development and a new way of making sense of everything all at the same time. It is SO important in this modern world of hustle-and-bustle to take the time to listen to what children are trying to tell us and this book shows you how........AND WHY. The activities book, of course, is an added bonus for which I will leave a separate review, but I strongly suggest reading (or at least skimming) this book first. It will give you context for what you are doing with children and help you learn why certain children will react differently to the same activity. It will help you appreciate those reactions and learn to help children become unique in their own ways because of those little clues and hints to their temperaments and personalities that most people will miss. As a secondary benefit for parents, I am able to better clue in to the details in my daycare about which I can comfortably ask questions. For those parents who have not yet found a daycare provider.......READ THIS BOOK! It will help you come up with a checklist of the things that are most important to you when looking for someone to care for and love your child as much as you do!

Great Introduction, Great Reference Book!

Let me start by saying I have had Dr. Rogler as an instructor and he has been an invaluable mentor and teacher for myself and many others. Without his understanding of the subject matter and his propensity to break down a topic to make it easily digestible, I would not have made the leaps in comprehension of this subject matter that I have. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to get a deeper understanding of computer systems and their inner workings, and not feel discouraged by the technical jargon that goes along with computer science. This will be one of those books you will read and learn so much from that you will probably keep it on your shelf as a permanent addition. A wonderful reference book as well.
