Thrilling start to what could be a great Adventure Path

About the only criticism I have of this product is how the players are drawn into the adventure - they're in the crusader city of Kenabres when a massive demon attack breaks out. Then, the players wake up in underground cave and recall the events of the attack via flashback, where they were bystanders watching two heavyweights duel it out. It works okay because it's the opening scene of what should be an epic campaign, but I think I would rework it if I ran it, as I prefer the players to be the center of attention.

From there, however, the adventure works really well. The players are "stuck" with three very interesting NPCs, all of whom could be potential allies and recurring NPCs, and must fight their way back to the surface. These three NPCs, plus one other who enters the picture later, are very well designed NPCs with flavorful backgrounds and unique personalities. Kudos to Amber Scott for her creativity.

This adventure is designed to take players from level 1 to around level 6, so it does have more XP built into it than previous adventure path openers. There are numerous monsters and villains throughout, and good opportunities for role playing and plenty of combat as well. So, this introduction to the Wrath of the Righteous adventure path has something for every type of gamer. The final challenge seems almost impossible for level 5/6 players, but can be overcome with good planning, working together and some mythic assistance.

Good start, needs some GM care

Wrath of the Righteous is Paizo's first adventure path to date using the Mythic Adventures rules, detailing the tale of how a group of rag-tag heroes (as if there were any other kind in these sorts of tales) aid in beginning the Fifth Mendevian Crusade. The Crusades are an ongoing series of wars against the demon hordes of Deskari and Baphomet as they seek to invade Golarion through the Worldwound, a stable portal to the Abyss whose influenced territory spans the breadth of an entire country.

The latest Crusade starts with one Hell of a bang as Khorramzadeh the Storm King, a Balor of immense power, rips through the bordering city of Kenabres and shatters it's protective ward stone, opening a floodgate of demons to invade and wreak havoc. Our heroes awake in the undercity as a losing battle is waged above, and must struggle to survive with a handful of injured NPCs tagging along.

If this sounds like a compelling and action-packed start to an adventure, then buy it and find out the rest in there. You won't be disappointed with the characters or narrative, atmosphere, or content of this adventure path.

That being said, the game content needs a little help...

The Worldwound Incursion is an adventure aimed at progressing from levels 1-6, with the players obtaining their first Mythic Tier at the very conclusion. It has a satisfying pace, but depending on the make-up of the party the balance of power between the players and their enemies can be very strongly slanted. Buyer beware: the entire Wrath of the Righteous campaign is one where Paladins are absurdly powerful, with the vast, overwhelming majority of enemies being either undead, evil outsiders, or chaotic evil humanoids. Even when the campaign seems to promise a cool or climactic encounter, it's likely that if your party includes a Paladin that nothing will last more than one round. It's therefore necessary to improvise and adjust the encounters as they're presented to make them into a reasonable challenge against what is ostensibly the target audience for this book.

For book 1, I recommend leveraging this during Part 3, as it has the most open-ended structure for potential encounters. You can introduce more powerful demons earlier, or use enemies that stalk and harass the party rather than attacking them outright. Anything that can take advantage of stealth or flight should do so, as brute force can be easily thwarted by a smite, and you should leverage NUMBERS of enemies on the players at each opportunity -- if the Paladin can't pay attention to everything clearly, the game becomes more interesting. Don't be afraid to have things sneak around behind the players' backs only to show up in the middle of an encounter.

That being said, a few encounters and obstacles that seem to exist purely as time-wasting filler instead of a genuine challenge or dilemma. These mainly crop up in part 1 and 2, when the party is spending most of their time underground and escorting the NPCs.

For part 1 I recommend skipping certain the crevice if you aren't working with a first-time party, as some of this adventure's ideas of what constitutes a puzzle or team-building exercise are pretty puerile. First timers will enjoy this, veterans will roll their eyes as you waste their time with a puzzle they already did during their first D&D game.

For part 2, look, just don't bother with the room full of Dire Rats, they aren't interesting by the time the party gets to them -- everything else in there is so much cooler, and so is everything that's ahead of that encounter.

Other than that, the characters introduced in this adventure are an awful lot of fun to work with, the atmosphere is intense, and the action is solid. If nothing else, pick this up if you're wondering about good ways to develop a campaign for Mythic characters, as this cultivates the pacing and story structure for such a campaign expertly.

Good start to a VERY good Adventure Path ~

This is the four star beginning to a five star Adventure Path. The main two issues with this first path is that the adventures starts suddenly and then railroads the players into a specific cycle of events. It is a lot like being in a film or novel rather than a fully open table top RPG. But that's okay for the first part - being level one, it's great for newbies to the game, though it requires a bit more experienced GM. Which brings us to the other issue - the heavy reliance on NPCs in the first part. With three NPCs pivotal to the story, the GM has his/her hands full running three (non-active at least) characters. Where it gets a little convoluted is where there are XP bonuses built into mediation for the NPCs - it is an awkward setup for a level one adventure. That being said - the few problems in this adventure are really not major hurdles. The pros far outweigh the cons. The other minor quibble is that the players will gain mythic powers, requiring some knowledge of the mythic adventures or purchase of the compendium.

The best aspect of this adventure is the setting. The Worldwound is an interesting and exciting place for Pathfinder adventures. You do not need the Worldwound setting book, but it does help the GM with some background information in case the players want more. There is a printable sheet with the basic information for the players on the Paizo site. This should be given to all the players prior to the start of the adventure.

Another great aspect is the world building aspect which can occur after this module is completed. The players have some time to establish their jobs or assist in building or patrolling - whatever the GM allows. This can also give players some additional GM made side adventures if they are a little short on XP for the next module. This path recommends using the fast track XP amounts, but experienced GMs can slow this down if they want to squeeze in some of their own side adventures between books.

There is not much intrigue in this module, but the overall story has a bit of that classic 'the odds are against you' feel. The subsequent volumes improve greatly and add some more variety and flavor. It is really worth starting this path because it gets really, REALLY good.

About the Author
John is the founder of the Academic Life Coaching Program.� He has also written for Newsweek and published the book Future-Proofed: Your Guide to Acing High School, the College Application and Beyond. He started his career as a high school Latin teacher and started his life coach training in 2004. He created the Academic Life Coaching Program in 2005 when he realized there was a big gap in what students were learning in school and what was really useful in life. Paul Finkelman is the author of An Imperfect Union: Slavery, Federalism, and Comity (1981); Slavery in the Courtroom (1985), which received the Joseph L. Andrews Award from the American Association of Law Libraries; and His Soul Goes Marching On: Responses to John Brown and the Harpers Ferry Raid (1995), which was a History Book Club selection. He has published numerous articles on American legal history and race relations and lectures frequently on the role of race in American legal development. In 1995, he was designated Virginia Historian of the Year by the Virginia Social Science Association.

Excellent Presentation

As students of U.S. history know, the Supreme Court decision in the Dred Scott case was one of the major causes leading up to the Civil War. Prof. Finkelman has provided a valuable educational tool that will help students understanding this important part of our history. His clear and concise explanation of the case, including an analysis of the majority opinion, concurring opinions, and dissenting opinions, and other relevant aspects, is well-researched and well-written. He also includes excerpts from the Supreme Court's opinion so that readers can examine it and draw their own conclusions. Any serious student of U.S. history, particularly of the Civil War period and the events leading up to it, should own a copy of this book.

Not what I expected

I love Oya! I wanted a book that would help me in understanding this Orisha more deeply but this was a compilation of others interpretations of her through personal experiences. I got lost in the shuffle and most of the reading was tedious, so I didn't finish it. Understand that it's not that the book is no good, it's that it wasn't what I expected or was looking for.

Poorly written

This is a fascinating subject as this is one of the most complex African goddesses. There has obviously been lots of research but the author jumps from one subject to another and unintentionally trivializes the subject. We go from buffalo goddesses to spirits of lightning to the goddess of the cloth. Gleason could have done a much better job in writing.

"Oya: In Praise of an African Goddess" is a well researched thoughtful and spiritual guide to the angelic force, orisha Oya. Judith Gleason presents an in depth analysis of Oya's abilities to quickly transform weather, produce tornadoes and violent storms. The illustrations bring both the scientific and the emotional aspects of Oya brilliantly to life. It would seem to be a challenging job to dedicate an entire book to one single orisha but Judith Gleason does it with great passion. "Oya: In Praise of an African Goddess" is highly recommended for students, practitioners and those curious about Ifa.

People like to get their learning in the form of stories. If you tell an engaging and compelling story, people will learn something from it and they will retain that knowledge. So that's what I attempt to do in Strange Glow. The book is the story of man's encounters with radiation, and how mankind has been transformed by the experience. The story is told with an emphasis on the human aspects, and it is told from a health-centric perspective. The goal is to integrate the technological aspects of radiation within the human experience and, thereby, remove some of the mystery and misunderstanding that surrounds radiation. Nevertheless, this is not a book about lessening your fear of radiation. Fear is a very subjective emotion, driven by many factors. The only thing that this book can achieve is to present the facts about radiation as objectively and evenhandedly as possible, leaving its readers to decide for themselves which aspects of radiation they should fear.
��� Another purpose of this book is to dispel the myth that the subject of radiation risks is so complicated that it is beyond the capability of ordinary people to grasp, leaving as their only recourse reliance on radiation "experts." This is simply not true. Intelligent people, even those lacking any technical background, should be able to understand the fundamental principles that drive radiation risk and make their own decisions about how large a threat radiation poses to them individually and to society at large. This book seeks to convince people that they can be masters of their own radiation fate, and to empower them to make their own well-informed decisions about their personal radiation exposures.
���� Lastly, this book is an experiment in risk communication. The open question is whether radiation risks can be characterized accurately and effectively without reliance on a lot of mathematics, tables, and graphs. These highly quantitative approaches have proved to be largely ineffective in communicating the essence of risk to the public. This book is devoid of graphs and tables and keeps the mathematics to a minimum. Instead, it tries to instill a sense of the magnitude of the threat through a historical scientific narrative about the people who encountered radiation of various types and dose levels, and the health consequences of those exposures. In this way, we can get an accurate sense of the level of the radiation hazard even without a detailed understanding of the underlying technology.

Timothy J. Jorgensen is associate professor of Radiation Medicine, and Director of the Health Physics and Radiation Protection Graduate Program, at Georgetown University in Washington DC. He serves on the National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP), he chairs the Georgetown University Radiation Safety Committee, and he is an associate in the Epidemiology Department at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University.

A clear-headed and engaging account of the history, promises and myths of radiation

Timothy Jorgensen has written an account of radiation which chronicles the science, personalities and history involved in our understanding of this seemingly mysterious and yet very important and all-pervasive entity. In addition the book does a very good job of dispelling many myths about the correlation between radiation and health issues like cancer. The book excels mainly in three ways.

Firstly Jorgensen provides an exciting and clear account of the scientific history of radiation, ranging from the intriguing observations of radioactivity in natural ores and in radioactive rays at the turn of the twentieth century, all the way to the science of nuclear explosions and nuclear reactors. Along the way there are also revealing insights into topics like radiation units, radioactivity in the environment and the biological effects of radiation, especially on genetic material. Jorgensen is a clear and enthusiastic explainer.

Secondly, the book narrates the stories of the fascinating personalities who were involved in the story of radiation. These involve both brilliant scientists like Rutherford, Mueller, the Curies and the Braggs as well as lesser known scientists and doctors who were instrumental in unearthing the nature and effects of this elemental entity. More importantly though, the book excels in painting sobering portraits of the victims of the misuse of radiation, such as the "radium girls" in Connecticut and New Jersey who got sick from licking the radium-laced tips of brushes used to paint luminous watch dials to the Pacific islanders who were the victims of atomic tests which were conducted as part of the power play of the superpowers. Parts of the book thus shine well as a human interest story.

Lastly, the book offers a clear-headed guide to dispelling many myths about radiation. There is an excellent treatment on the effects of radiation in potentially causing cancer. Jorgensen examines many of the most well known phenomena and accidents involving radiation - Hiroshima, Chernobyl, radon contamination in homes, x-rays and CT scans, cell phone use and finally Fukushima - and concludes that there is no evidence in any of these cases of an excess of cancers that is significantly more than the 'natural' incidence (about 25%). Getting x-rays and CT scans and living close to a nuclear reactor in particular pose almost negligible risks since the radiation from these sources can be easily exceeded by normal background radiation from the environment. Nor is there any conclusive evidence that radiations risks can be extrapolated all the way down to zero. Risks from radiation should not be dismissed, but as Jorgensen carefully documents, they should always be seen for what they are in context. Sadly our fear of the unknown often tends to exaggerate these risks.

I would recommend this very authoritative book to any science or history minded reader and in fact to any citizens who might be concerned about the nuclear reactor in their city or who might want to know how to realistically gauge the effects of radiation of any kind and how we got to our present understanding of such effects. This kind of information would be handy the next time you hear about any radiation-related event in the paper or on TV. Recommended especially for public and university libraries.

Definitely cheaper than buying it from the college bookstore. Paid 1/3 of what the school wanted for it by buying it from Amazon. Includes both volumes which is essentially 1 book for medical, and another for trauma. Also includes the online code on the inside cover, which is something I really wanted.

Unhurriedly Pragmatic Adventure Story

In the literary world it is perhaps blasphemy to say a bad word against Daniel Defoe's most acclaimed novel. So here goes. The fact that the book was originally titled The Life And Strange Surprising Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe illustrates the major flaw in Defoe's literary form. Put simply, this would be a far more interesting and gripping story were it not so superfluously lengthy. The author makes a habit of repeating himself, especially when it comes to the act of dispatching kittens, which seems to be more of an obsession here than octogenarian ladies are to MatronsApron. It is difficult, you may think, to keep the subject matter fresh when describing the daily tribulations of a fellow stranded on an island for thirty years, without occasionally repeating yourself. True, but perhaps a straightforward solution to this diminutive quandary would be to simply truncate the duration of the story. There are some wonderfully intriguing and suspenseful moments, and some juicy action to boot, but sadly these are gratuitously diluted by lengthy descriptions of the unremarkable everyday goings on in Crusoe's life, and rather than serving to build up the suspense, they merely obstruct the reader's relationship with the more exciting parts of the story.
However, those with more patience than my ignorant self will find in Robinson Crusoe a delightful tale, which as well as being a fictional documentary of the most unusual thirty years of Mr. Crusoe's life, also has time to ponder upon philosophical and theological ideas, in a style that makes the reader feel as if they are involved in the conflicts between the functionalist and cynical thoughts going on in Crusoe's mind. It may not be a gripping white-knuckle adventure, being rather more leisurely and acquiescent, but it is still rather easy to see why Robinson Crusoe is regarded by some as one of the greatest novels of all time.

About the Author
Rosalee A. Clawson is professor of political science at Purdue University. Her research focuses on public opinion, mass media and politics, political psychology, and the politics of race, class, and gender. Her work has been published in the American Political Science Review, Public Opinion Quarterly, Political Communication, Journal of Black Studies, and Global Environmental Change. She is the coauthor of Legacy and Legitimacy: Black Americans and the Supreme Court.

Zoe M. Oxley is professor of political science at Union College. Her research interests include the effects of the media on public opinion, gender and public opinion, women in electoral politics, and political psychology. Her work has been published in the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Politics & Gender, and PS: Political Science and Politics.
