More Problems for Alex

In the second book of this series Alex has gone home to find that her mother is going to marry the father of her best childhood friend, whom she is in love with and who has shown himself to be a womanizer, and now they are going to be step siblings. She has ran away once when she found Damon in a compromising position with another woman, her best friend from summer camp, and now they are being thrown together for this wedding. Alex puts on a brave face and helps her mother prepare for the wedding trying to avoid Damon as much as possible. Shauna, Alex's friend she has seen Damon with, is invited to the wedding by her mother. Damon has brought another woman to the wedding and while trying to leave Alex overhears an argument between the two and then she meets Shauna who informs her that nothing happened between her and Damon and that Damon loves Alex. As this episode ends Alex and Damon are in bed together when the newlywed parents come in the door. What will this mean for the relationship between these two childhood friends who have declared their love for each other?

An excellent job of storytelling and I cannot wait for Book 3 in the series. I received a free copy of this book in return for a review.

How can something be so wrong yet right at the same time

Alex feels so betrayed and hurt by Damon. She has just found out that her mother is about to get married again but the problem is who it is. Damon has found her but things are about to become even more complicated. They both love each other but they can't be together and it will change them forever. Things come to head and Alex runs again but this is the end for them. Will they find each other and can they be together no matter what others think? The next one is going to be even better as the story has just heated up. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review via the author through Librarything

Researcher goes Native

One small neighborhood in the north end of Champaign, Illinois is the setting for Applied Science Research Professor Mark Fleisher’s look at three individuals’ lives as they struggle to get out of poverty. He describes the obstacles that he as a white man had connecting with and maintaining impartiality with minority family subjects. The notes are valuable to show researcher bias and his gradual loss of objectivity. The book illustrates perfectly a pattern that occurs repeatedly throughout the United States as outsiders look at an impoverish neighborhood decide what is best without recognizing that the people living there have families, relationships, potential, and self-awareness.

Feel the classics....learn a scale inside out...

Great book, and even better if you've got a mate who can learn the accompanying parts.

Bach pieces arranged for the bass vary from the simple to the all out incredible, but with this bok you can work over the easy and the hard stuff at your own pace. Tab is there for those that need it, bu the notation is also there which is very important to get a feel for the pieces. The notes are also most informative with regard to feel, time signature and speed. Given enough practise, you can master a few of the arrangements very quickly, and before long, be able to impress a few people with your new found dexterity. Then impress them more when you do a full duet with a mate...

This is a great book for intermediate to advanced level Electric Bass. There are two duets for Bass and Violin (or G Clef instrument) and one for Bass with accompaniment for Piano. Includes the tab notation which helps a lot!

Not bad for the first real book on VJing

There's been so much discussion online about the development of a VJing book, but this one wins the prize as the first - or at least the first to make it into our letterbox. As a trailblazing tome on such a complex and rapidly growing and changing field, I can certainly forgive it a few errors and omissions.

The DVD is just OK - all the best material on it has already appeared elsewhere, such as the Eyewash Sessions, and there are some inclusions that I can't for the life of me see as VJing in any way. Calling something VJing isn't an excuse for a badly made music video clip. But hey, even without the DVD, the book's good value so just consider it a bonus.

The book is short and covers some complex technical topics a little too flippantly at times - eg, as a PC/Resolume user, my guess is that their criticisms of that program's poor performance were due to use of incompatible codecs with their clips. Perhaps if they'd got user reviews by professional VJs for each of the main packages it would have been more accurate and balanced.

Having said that, this book isn't about technicalities. The writers' and interviewees' passion for what they do is palpable. The main message of the book, at least to my mind, is that it doesn't matter HOW you do what you do, and that there is no right or wrong way to VJ. It's an art, and no instruction-book is going to make you any good at it, if 'it' isn't inside you.

There is a fairly American focus, but that's fair enough. The European, Australasian and other regional cliques can write our own books. This is a great starting point. If we Aussies want to claim credit for modern VJing thanks to the Fairlight CVI, that's another whole book to write.

The most wonderful thing about the book (and the reason I've bought 8 copies to give away already) is the historical contextualisation. I knew there were some early experiments with Colour-Music, but I had no idea they went back to the 1700's, when clavessins were made with precious stones, mirrors, lenses and candles to project coloured light. I want one!

Not bad, but getting dated

I got this book about 1/2 for curiosity and 1/2 for an interest in multimedia art exhibits (tangentially related to VJing). I'll repeat the other reviews: the DVD is useless. But the book is quite a good introduction to VJing if perhaps a bit dated now as the technologies central to the activity have progressed.

Easy to read... lots of interesting information.. a must for any VJ interested in the bigger picture... Only let down is they failed to mention anything about the SDI video signal. I would have liked something about it... Yet it's still a very interesting 'and easy' read plus the price is fantastic. :)

Fine selection of essays by a great man

This comparatively short book consists of extremely well-selected essays by the great Scottish philosopher and historian, on everything from public credit to delicacy of taste. Also included are the different classes of philosphers, including the class Hume falls under, The Sceptic (Hume's sp.). There is also an exceedingly interesting essay on the populousness of the world in ancient times. Apparently, the accepted notion at Hume's time was that there were hordes of people in ancient times and that our race has been dwindling ever since. Hume, on the other hand, proposes the radical notion that just the opposite is the case, and sets out to prove it quite handily.-Overall, the best introduction to one of my favorite writers that I've yet to read.

Highly entertaining corpus of essays

Written in the highly polished Augustan prose style of the period, this is a fine selection of essays from the pen of the great Scottish philosopher, historian and economist, David Hume. The essays range from aesthetics, commerce, history and ethics, which include such pieces as "The Epicurean", "The Stoic" and "The Sceptic" (Hume's own credo) all which are rather curiously positioned and excellently written guides to living. "Of the Immortality of the Soul" and "Of Suicide", two of Hume's most controversial essays touching on theological topics, are also included in this volume. Both succeeded, with their bold, original arguments, in outraging the British clergy, which helps us to understand why Hume decided to have them published posthumously.

Excellent View of Hume

Hume is known today primarily for his seminal philosophical works. He regarded himself, however, as a man of letters who contributed to many areas and he was known best to his contemporaries as a historian. This nice collection of essays displays the breadth of Hume's interests and his well developed writing style. Hume was particularly interested in essays which would bring important topics before a broad public and wrote in an accessible and often entertaining style. Some of Hume's best known essays on philosophical and religous topics are included in this collection. What may be of greatest interest are some of the lesser known essays which display both the versatility and the power of Hume's intellect. Included are essays on economics and international trade, and also some political theory. Hume was an opponent of mercantilist ideas, supporting the largely correct notion that trade would enrich all parties. His political theory is particularly interesting. In contradistinction to the widely accepted ideas of the time, Hume suggested that republican governments could be stable if the size of the republic was large enough to encompass enough competing groups to prevent one from assuming complete control. It is known that James Madison read Hume in the period leading up to the Constitutional Convention and many scholars suspect that Hume's ideas were the germ of the defense of republicanism/federalism developed by Madison in the Federalist Papers. A momentous idea with momentous consequences.

A Seminal Reference Book

I have just replaced my tattered copy of the seminal five star "Spraycan Art" book. This was the first and only book to follow graffiti art out of the NYC subways and around the world. Not only did the book name the art form, but the authors obviously knew and found the key writers of their time. Witness the visionary choice of Mode 2, age 15, on the cover. ....Thirteen years after being first printed, this book is still a vital reference for all of us who are interested in the graffiti aspect of Hip-Hop. I, for one, am grateful that Chalfant and Prigoff were willing to spend the enormous time and effort that was obviously necessary to capture this historic period on film, give voice to the writers through the interview process, and to make available important historic information.

A work of major significance

As a public art historian, I recently revisited Spraycan Art. I am told that the sales on this book are approaching 200,000 copies. In 1987 it was the first look at the art form as it traveled out of the NYC subways and around the world and although writers today are more sophisticated with their mastery of the spray can and the imagery they create, the book is still very current in its look at the graffiti world and its place in the Hip Hop scene. It is remarkable to me how Chalfant and Prigoff came to know the key writers of those years, both nationally and internationally. Their contribution to the graf world as professional documentary photographers, authors and resource people has withstood the test of time. It is a must read for current writers, historians or just anyone interested in a unique art form created by youth. Interesting that the book named the art for all time.

This Advanced Level Physics book is one of the best I have seen. The book is divided into 7 themes (Mechanics, Materials, Fields, Waves, Electricity, Inside the Atom and Physics in Medicine). The physical concepts as well as the formulas involved are explained in plain text as well as on clearly labelled diagrams.
I did the IB using this book and I found it highly relevant to the course, as it explained the syllabus and the options in great detail, and very comprehensively.
Moreover, there is a variety of practice questions from previous examinations at the back of each chapter, which vary in difficulty.
All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to obtain a top grade in a Physics course equivalent to A-level Physics.

The Reluctant Matchmaker

When 31 year-old Meena literally falls for the CEO of her company she think she may finally found a way to escape the matchmakers of her family. When Parjay requests a private meeting the last thing the petite Meena expected was a request for her help in finding him a six foot plus bride. Bantwal as as always is a great story teller. She creates relate-able characters and gives the reader a look into the Indian-American experience where the younger American born generation can get caught trying to find a balance between the two cultures.

In Princeton Junction, New Jersey, pint-sized marketing and public relations manager Meena Shenoy is excited over her upcoming first meeting with her boss Prajay Nayak, the CEO and president of Rathnaya, Inc. Eighty-five pounds when dripping wet Meena never expected to meet her employer when they collide. She sprains her ankle as her body felt like a truck ran over it. However, it is her mind that is discombobulated as she now understands what her mom means in her native language Konkani when she says nasheeba kheloo (destiny's game).

Prajay tells Meena that at thirty-nine his family expects him to marry as his siblings are married with kids; they wonder if he might be gay; a thought that Meena had too. Meena commiserates as her family wants her to wed soonest and is upset over who her brother is seeing. He asks Meena to write an ad in the matrimonial columns of a few select India-American newspapers and websites with a key requirement that she be at least six feet tall educated Hindu with a sense of humor. Stunned, as she wants to be the chosen one, Meena works on finding her boss a spouse though she wished he would look down to her.

The Reluctant Matchmaker is a fabulous fun frolic starring two likable protagonists while providing readers with a close look at the Indian-American culture, which mingles tradition from the old country with modern technology and the ways of the new country. The storyline reads like a 1930s madcap comedy in a Bollywood-New Jersey setting as Shobhan Bantwal provides an enjoyable contemporary romance

A great Match for Summer Reading!

"Matchmaker, Matchmaker make me a match......" is not the song running thru Meena's head when she runs into (literally!) her boss. She sprains her ankle, gets carried (by him) to his office where she spends the rest of the day on his couch resting. While she misses the whole thing he also carried her to his car and hauls her home. A very compassionate employer. What she didn't miss is that he is 6'5" and she is five foot even if she stretches. He is HUGE for an Indian man and a bit intimidating.
Meena, PR person for Prajay Nayak's firm and the newest employee soon falls - and hard - for him. Her parents and aunts are trying weekly to set her up as she is past marrying age in their culture and is trying to be independent which is quite annoying to them. Meena turns down everyone or, after one date has found the man was not her type. This was happening before she met Prajay and now is worse. She tries, she really tries but they aren't him.
To make matters worse, Prajay is being harassed by his own family since he is nearly forty and single. He has an idea that, by hiring Meena to find him a potential wife; it will cut down the chaos of dating. She agrees, reluctantly and begins breaking her own heart with the task. He wants a smart woman who is 6' tall. Amazing how many Indian women are out there who fit his requirements. Meena isn't one of them. And then her aunt Akka shows up on the doorstep. Her brother falls in love - with a Muslim and chaos ensues.
Obsession with size, misclues and failed dates populate this wonderful novel. The author has written five other books which I am currently looking for because this was a nice book. No cursing, no hard drugs nor alcohol. Just a fantastic story about a young Indian woman trying to find her way in a culture centuries old while not losing herself in the process. Go get it. NOW!

So True its Scary

Having spent ten years in the seminary studying to be a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Orange in California, I picked up Rose's piece of work on a whim. The first couple of pages scared the hell out of me because he is right on target. The seminary system in and of itself is corrupted at its core... more time was spent in class discussing heretical theologicans and the need for openness towards women than the actual studies that would help us be priests! Homosexuality was in full force and more than a few guys were openly dating each other. Rose exposes these troubled times within the seminary system with a full force that should be acknowledged. Until the Bishops of America decide to overhaul the seminary system and strengthen the requirements of prayer and the Mass and eliminate the feel good spirituality classes that are taught there, the Church will continue to suffer. I personally know some of the persons written by Rose... and none of it surprises me.

I should have believed my friend who warned me two years ago

A friend of mine who entered an orthodox seminary two years ago warned me about a "homosexual problem" at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA (under Cardinal Law). I consider myself to be an orthodox Catholic but I wrote off his concerns as paranoia. Sadly, he seems to have understated the problem. In the book, Rose describes the case of one orthodox seminarian at St. John's who was sexually harassed by homosexual seminarians and whose allegations were ignored by the faculty to the point where he was forced to obtain a restraining order against the offending seminarian.
Many similar cases are presented throughout the book which is largely a compilation of anecdotes. This does not constitute an indictment of the book. The book is not meant to be a sociological, statistical analysis of homosexuality in the priesthood, but rather an on-the-ground description of the situation in heterodox seminaries. The reader will get a sense of the oppressive atmosphere for orthodox seminarians in seminaries controlled by heterodox and/or homosexual cliques.
In fact, one can deduce a pattern of networking and conspiracy amongst heterodox/homosexual priests and seminarians to root out orthodox candidates from the priesthood. The anecdotal evidence presented in the book is simply overwhelming, as is the fact that the vast majority of reported cases of sexual abuse by priests consists of the abuse of teenage boys, indicating that homosexuals comprise a disproportionate percentage of priests in comparison to their existence in the general population.
Certainly homosexual priests are abusing teenage boys in far greater proportion than heterosexual priests are abusing teenage girls. This fact explains why this book is not getting general play in the media and why the scandal is generally portrayed as one of "pedophilia" rather than ephebophilia. But this book will help you to understand the nature and roots of this present crisis.
(This book gets knocked down a star for its anecdotal nature, but five stars for its importance)

Simply mind-boggling

I'm a product of 16 years of Catholic education. For the past 15 years or so I've been told that we have a 'vocations crisis' within the Church -- that young men are no longer interested in becoming priests. A litany of reasons is given for this: young men are too materialistic today, celibacy is too difficult for us 'enlightened' moderns, young men don't agree with the Church's positions on moral issues, the Church hasn't done enough marketing, and (most disingenuous of all) leftover orthodoxy from the pre-Vatican II period is driving young men away.
Those 'liberals' within the Church offer up a predictable laundry list of "solutions" for this 'vocations crisis': Married priests, priestesses, "lay ministers", etc. Until very recently, these ideas almost looked reasonable. Not anymore.
This book positively blows the lid off of all the false reasons for the 'vocations crisis' and uncovers the shocking truth and hidden agendas behind what's going on in Catholic seminaries across the U.S. I used to think that a good Catholic fellow who believed and followed what the Church taught about such issues as abortion, contraception, homosexuality, the primacy of the Pope, transubstantiation, the immaculate conception, etc. would be a shoe-in for the priesthood. What this book demonstrates is that such devout young men are being routinely TURNED AWAY from the seminaries for no other reason than that they hold and believe these eminently orthodox positions! Who are being accepted in their places? I think the current and growing scandal within the Catholic Church in America provides a clear-cut answer. Now, institutionally, the Catholic Church in America is suffering an evisceration that Antonio Gramsci would be proud of.
In short, if you are a Catholic and you honestly care about what's been happening within our Church and why, you simply can not ignore this book. It will be very difficult reading for many of you, but if we are to weed out the wolves-in-sheep's-clothing among our leaders, we must begin with an honest appraisal of the situation. This book offers just such an appraisal and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
