Hands down one of the best books breaking down the different componets of the cultural & ritualistic ties of antiquity. Diop's theory of the polarization of the Southern and Northern hemispheres of the earth along the continent of Asia acting as a "zone of confluence" is a precise outlining for the different practices of social organization as they existed in the past. He goes into the studies of many 17th century socialist such as JJ Bachofen, Lewis H. Morgan, and Friedrich Engels to show the many discrepancies created out of preassumption of the characteristics of people who they never tooken in to study, such as the many societies existing within the interior of Africa.

It seems the main theory that he wishes to debunk is that of an parallel development of social organization existing between the hemispheres. This logically could not have existed due to the many difficulties a people living in two different climates varying from an abundance of resources to the disperation of a scarcity would have practicing the same modes of production and consumption. As an natural habitat causes for an particular adjustment to the environment, two modes of polar disciplines arise, in the southern hemisphere the practice of agriculture develops as the main line of life maintience and wealth, while in the northern hemisphere the practice of horticulture takes a preeminence as the providing occupation. Thus the manifestion
of gender roles as we know them today was heavly dependant upon the different masculine or feminine traits it took to contribute to the necessitated occupations of a sendentary agriculturalist lifestyle or that of a nomadic & pastrolist one.

Diop also goes in depth into the many anamolites that exists within each hemisphere as a result of cultural influence, or an scholarly misrepresentation of a cultural activity.

The Introduction given by Dr.John Henrik Clarke is well worth the read as well, lecturing on the sexist equality that existed within Africa, citing the many cases of history when woman were able to inheirent the throne of central authority a la Queen Hapshesut,or the many miltarity accomlishments of the Candace Queens of Ethiopia. Although Dr.Clarke NEVER dissapoints.

This book is deep and complex. One has to read it to grasp and understand. Anyway, Diop essentially divides the world into two cradles - the Northern (patriarchal in character), and Southern (Black and matriarchal). He clearly demonstrates that matriarchy could only be found in Black populations, specifically in Africa, or other places subject to Black influence. European and Asiatic societies have a patriarchal regime because of the demanding nomadic lifestyle in the Eurasian steppes. The sedentary life of Blacks is what fueled great respect for women...the Black woman being the inventor of agriculture. Children often got their names from the mother's lineage. He clearly argues his facts by explaining dowry, fire worship, cremation, amazonism, etc. He gives thorough examples throughout.
This is not just another feel-good book from a zealous Afrocentrist. This is true scholarship! I am sure all readers will be convinced when they finish reading it. Islam, colonization, and Christianity have truely changed the Black world in terms of its matriarchal character. We should respect our women. In European and Asian history, you will never find anything resembling the armed Sudanese Kandake, the Angolan Nzinga, the Egyptian Hatshetsup and Tiye,...the list is endless. Perhaps it's matriarchy that fueled our ancient societies to become world powers in our glory days. We can only imagine. Can Africa ever really gain what it's lost? That's the question. In a way, I feel that Diop asks the same question.

I read a story-version of this many long years ago, and I know it's been done as a puppet theatre and children's film version, but I'd never read the original play, so this was a treat. Good quality hardcover, only slightly used, very expeditions shipping, thank you.

Great story & spunky characters

Loved this story! Bridget is such a spunky character and I was laughing out loud at least once in every chapter at her antics. This book got me started on a medieval period reading kick and I'm excited for her next one!

Bridget was the oldest sister she was engaged to Samson who was abusive. But when the country gets a new king all English engagement were off. Bridget was happy and begged her dad to let her become a nun as she didn’t want to marry if it met being with someone like Samson and you couldn’t be sure. Bridget’s sister Aislinn is to marry Gregoire who is to take over for Bridget’s father. Bridget’s is on her way to visit a sick monk when she comes upon Gregoire - the new Earl- Gregoire and Bridget has instant attraction. Bridget and Gregoire to translate for Aislinn and Gregoire. Aislinn is very quiet and seems to be withdrawn. Gregoire had a bad first marriage and wanted his next bride to want to marry him so there is two weeks before the wedding is due to happen and he wants to court his future wife. Gregoire is a warrior but wants a home and family. Bridget and Gregoire had met five years ago when Gregoire was made Earl.
This was a very good story. The plot was good as was the writing. I liked the fact Gregoire wanted his next wife to want to marry him that is my idea of a good man in that time frame. I felt bad for Bridget if she hadn’t experienced Samson she would be the one that was suppose to marry Gregoire. It just adds extra to the story in a good way. I liked the ins and outs of this story especially the ones concerning Bridget and Gregoire. I recommend.

A toe curler of a romance! A female Cyrano de Bergerac but better.

Comte Gr�goire FitzHenri has been awarded Shyleburgh by William of Normandy the new King of England who replaces the English lords with Normans. As a pledge of loyalty, he is betrothed to the former lord’s – now his seneschal - heir & daughter. But Gr�goire is resolute that his bride must come to him willing and in the 2 weeks prior to their wedding, he commences on a campaign to woo her. Unfortunately the beautiful Aislinn hardly speaks any French while Gr�goire speaks little English & thus it is up to Aislinn’s elder sister Bridget who is fluent in both languages to play the part of interpreter between the two.

This was an absolutely beautifully written story! It is Bridget that Gr�goire finds himself drawn to; her earthly, natural charm & intelligence rather than Aislinn’s pallid, remote beauty. While Aislinn finds Gr�goire's maleness intimidating, Bridget has been secretly idolizing him since meeting him 5 years ago when he was made the Earl. But her decision had been made before then to give up her position as her father’s heir & join a convent after suffering abuse at the hands of her 1st betrothed.

Bridget does her utmost to bring Gr�goire & the somewhat detached Aislinn together but gets her own emotions very much tangled into it. The romance is amazingly intense, as Bridget speaks supposedly of Aislinn’s feelings to Gr�goire, what are her own feelings. She pours out her own wants & yearnings to Gr�goire as “Aislinn’s” to convince him that he is winning Aislinn over but you can feel the heat curling off the pages between Bridget & Gr�goire with every word she speaks.

This was my 1st time reading a book from this author & I enjoyed it thoroughly.
