About the Author
Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Center for Advanced Governmental Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or coauthor of 25 books, including Presidential Power: Unchecked and Unbalanced; Downsizing Democracy: How America Sidelined Its Citizens and Privatized Its Public; Politics by Other Means; The Consequences of Consent; The Worth of War; and The Captive Public. Ginsberg received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1973. Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1992, Ginsberg was Professor of Government at Cornell. His most recent books are The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters; What the Government Thinks of the People; and Analytics, Policy and Governance.

Theodore J. Lowi has been John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University since 1972. He was elected President of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Caroline Tolbert is Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa, where she regularly teaches the introductory American government course and was awarded the Collegiate Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and research. Her research explores political behavior, elections, American state politics, and the Internet and politics. Tolbert is coauthor of Digital Citizenship: The Internet Society and Participation; Why Iowa? How Caucuses and Sequential Elections Improve the Presidential Nominating Process; and Virtual Inequality: Beyond the Digital Divide. Digital Citizenship was ranked one of 20 best-selling titles in the social sciences by the American Library Association in 2007. Her latest coauthored scholarly book is Digital Cities: The Internet and the Geography of Opportunity. She is President of the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association.

Margaret Weir is Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She has written widely on social policy in Europe and the United States. She is the author of Politics and Jobs: The Boundaries of Employment Policy in the United States and coauthor (with Ira Katznelson) of Schooling for All: Class, Race, and the Decline of the Democratic Ideal. Weir has also edited (with Ann Shola Orloff and Theda Skocpol) The Politics of Social Policy in the United States.

About the Author
Wendy Doniger (Ph.D. Harvard University) is Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago. She first trained as a dancer under George Balanchine and Martha Graham and then went on to complete two doctorates in Sanskrit and Indian Studies (from Harvard and Oxford). She has taught at Harvard, Oxford, the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1984 she was elected president of the American Academy of Religion, in 1989 a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1996 a member of the American Philosophical Society, and in 1997 president of the Association for Asian Studies. She has been awarded seven honorary degrees, and her book The Hindus: An Alternative History was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Jack Miles (Ph.D. Harvard) is Distinguished Professor of English and Religious Studies with the University of California at Irvine and Senior Fellow for Religious Affairs with the Pacific Council on International Policy. He spent 1960–70 as a Jesuit seminarian, studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem before enrolling at Harvard University, where he completed a Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages in 1971. His book GOD: A Biography won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996, and Christ: A Crisis in the Life of God led to his being named a MacArthur Fellow for 2003-07.

Advanced SQL Programming!!!!

I have been programming database applications since 1984. I started using SQL in 1989. Since that time, I thought I had mastered SQL. Well ... I was wrong. Joe's book helps pin point the finer things concerning SQL ... how it really works. Anyone who is an ADVANCED user of SQL will find this book full of the little things that all most all developers will overlook. For example, how does a SQL statement really execute (pg 174 to 181) explains this in great detail. Many advanced developers are not just satisfied with knowing how to do something; but, want to know every little detail about how something really works. I found the chapters on normalization and Armstrong's Axioms to be the most useful concept in the entire book. Database design concepts are critical in performing a good, solid, and efficient query and this chapter brings it out very well. I have found this book to be my only source for advanced SQL concepts (besides Joe's puzzle book...). Good job ... and thanks.

Interesting tricks but may not quite practical

I think the book talks about a lot of interesting tricks which are not very crucial to a developer's everyday life work. I admit that without this book I'll probably have to spend more time to figure out how to perform this or that task, but I normally have no need to perform those tasks anyway. For my work, I'll prefer reading Oracle's online manual, or those popular Oracle books. Of course I'm keeping this book in case I really need to implement some strange things in my database and I can't find out how by myself.

Joe does a pretty good job

Some of the concepts are a little lofty for the casual SQL programmer, but it is SQL for Smarties not dummies. He gives a lot of SQL code in his examples, but does not show the results of the code in a screen shot that I believe would be most helpful.

Overall, I like the book and would buy it again given the opportunity.

Professor's perspective

Saladin is a pretty good anatomy and physiology text but it contains a number of errors in fact in some areas (e.g., renal), is not well balanced in some areas (e.g., cardiovascular and gastrointestinal) and the pictures are often incorrect (e.g., illustrating epithelial cells as a cube). As a physiologist it appears to me that the physiology is weaker than the anatomy. Many A&P texts contain the same errors, which suggests that these works are not entirely original. I've concluded that I need separate anatomy and physiology texts for my A&P course so that the students will have the benefit of true expertise in each subject area.

Well Written...Easy to Follow...Superb Textbook

I am in college, currently taking my 2nd term of Anatomy and Physiology as a pre-requisite for nursing school. This textbook has been fundamental to my understanding of this course, both for this term and last term (and I plan to use it next term, as well).

The clincher is that this is not the required text we are using for my class. A friend just happened to give me this Saladin book when she heard I was taking A&P and so I am using it as a companion text. Little did I know how much I would come to rely on this book; I really feel lucky that it was given to me.

The text my school uses is Martini's Fundamentals of Anatomy Physiology, which, to be fair, is also a very good text book. But there is something about the way Saladin writes and the way he organizes his thoughts about the subject matter that makes it so much easier for me to understand.Often, I will read my required textbook and be totally lost, not "getting it." This is especially true when I am researching information to answer essay questions for my exams. Then, I will read the same topic in Saladin's book and a light bulb will go off -- it will finally all make sense. I've even thought about writing a personal letter to the author to express my gratitude.

I highly recommend this textbook to anyone who wants a clear and easy to understand approach to anatomy & physiology. I feel Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function, by Kenneth S. Saladin, has been essential to my comprehension of anatomy & physiology; I'm not exaggerating when I say that being able to count on this book has helped me to keep making A's in this class!

Be Careful With This Edition

The first half of the text is excellent; graphics and reader-friendly verbiage are well done. Though I am obligated to say Saladin's treatment of the autonomic system needs extensive supplementation if your future academic program includes a course in Pharamacology.

The second half (roughly equating to second semester) is a disaster. I hope the next edition makes the significant repairs needed, especially with endocrine physiology.

Volume IV of the Battle Colors� series concludes the examination of USAAF combat insignia and aircraft tactical markings in the European Theater during WWII. Covered within this work are the Ninth, Twelfth, and Fifteenth AAFs from the first to last combat operations by U.S. air power in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. These operations were extensive and covered territory extending from the sands of North Africa to the heartland of Germany, and from the shores of French Morocco to the oil fields of Romania. Combat units covered include both Day and Night fighters, Bombers, Troop Transports, and Reconnaissance and Special Operations groups/squadrons.
All combat units assigned or attached to either of the three AAFs are covered within this work, utilizing over 1,123 full color illustrations and wartime photos. These depict every currently known AAF group/squadron insignia belonging to the Air Forces being examined. Included are both official and unofficial combat insignia, in addition to many designs that were superseded by later images. Wartime photos showing common applications of these unit insignia are interspersed throughout the text.
Aircraft tactical markings are depicted via original full color illustrations, showing full and close-up profiles in addition to upper elevation views when appropriate.
All known Theater airfield assignment locations and dates are detailed with color area maps included within each respective units section, and are all fully indexed for ease of reference in the back of the book. Reader-friendly "Group Markings" and "Group/Squadron Code" visual indexes are also included to assist research into specific AAF units.
Additional topics addressed include the evolution of U.S. AAC/AAF national markings, combat mission markings, and basis airframe nomenclature.
Those familiar with Volume III of this series (which deals exclusively with the Ninth USAAF) may wonder initially whether the inclusion of the Ninth in this current work is a rehash of material covered in Volume III. It is not! Volume IV deals with the same subject matter, but at an earlier period of the Ninth AAFs deployment in the MTO, prior to redeployment of this unit to the UK, from which point Volume III picks up.

Battle Colors Vol IV, Insignia and Aircraft markings of the USAAF in WW II

This book has a capsule history of the units operating in the Mediteranean Theater. It breaks down the aircraft markings unit by unit with colored aircraft profiles, squadron insignias, and a few vintage photos. It does try to pack a lot of information in just a few pages per unit. Support groups and transports are not as well covered as the combat groups. With the formation of the 12th and 15th Air Forces many of the groups found their missions changing and their markings also were revised. Their supply chain had them getting equipment after the 8th and 9th Air Forces. Escort groups persisted with Spitfires and hand me down P-38s long after they should have transitioned to P-51s. I found this a useful reference for modeling purposes.

This is the fourth volume of this particular series, and finally is getting out of the ETO into some of the lesser -known theaters. Yes- I like the 8AF too, but vols 1 and 2 just plowed some well worn furrows again. Vol. 3 was good - too few people pay much attention to the 9th AF.

The layout is good, lots of pictures, drawings and diagrams . Most of the information is available elsewhere (notably in Maurer Maurer's two works), especially with one page per Bomb Group.), but this is a good layout , especially for the younger (anyone under 40) historian. Serials of assigned aircraft would be a nice addition, but you can't have everything.

It is pricey, but you get what you pay for. If you want junk go to your local bookstore. This volume and its three predecessors are solid references and worth the money. Highly recommended

the contents of the book was just what I wanted.This was the second book in the series that I have ordered,and I expect to get the rest of the series.My only problem was that the dog got to the book first and distroyed the box and the dust cover.I hate that dog.

Gary Harper is a respected trainer in the field of conflict resolution. With thirteen years experience as a facilitator and mediator, he has worked with thousands of people in a variety of different organizations, as well as presenting regularly at conferences. He teaches at the Justice Institute in Vancouver, and lives in Burnaby, BC.

A place to start

Entertaining read with some useful information and a simple model for change and resolution in some, mostly benign, environments. The basic positions described offer a functional insight for simplification of how to rethink our roles with others. While useful, the concept is oversimplified when individual intent is added as another variable. In a world of sunshine and roses where everyone operates from a basis of good will to others, it provides a useful insight for avoiding common relationship road bumps. For more ardent conflicts based on deeply held judgments, deception, long patterns of passive aggressive fears and anger this simple model is way outgunned.
Over all, a good read and useful idea.

If you read this book, be sure to read "I'm OK, You're OK" by Thomas Harris, as it will help add important new dimension to the concepts.
These two books should be combined for at least 4 times the benefit.

Helpful insights

Harper explores how people in conflict unconsciously adopt three roles: Victim, Hero, and Villain. He encourages self-awareness in playing these roles. He notes that the roles shift as a conflict rolls along. To eliminate Villain, you must give up the Victim role and ask directly . The Hero must let go of being right. The Villain must let go of attacking, even in self-defense. Harper sees conflict as unmet needs. He encourages us to notice our assumptions and to move from judgment to curiosity. He devotes a chapter to defensiveness, noting that what underlies our defensiveness is an “unbearable idea.” One chapter is titled, “Standing Up for Ourselves (Without Knocking the Other Person Down).” He points out in this chapter that it isn’t useful to take the position that “I’m okay. They need professional help.”
Here are some of Harper’s tips for being a Warrior of the Heart and for exploring outside the triangle of Victim, Hero, Villain.
1. Observe yourself.
2. Clean up your own stuff.
3. Notice the defensive impulse.
4. When triggered, ask, “What do I fear?”
5. Note emotional signals and ask yourself, “What’s going on here?” Ask the other. Don’t assume you know.
6. Listen for the others’ needs.
7. When you see you are in a position, ask, “What is important to me?”
8. Rather than react to personal attacks, get curious.
9. Put your movie on pause and restate the other person's story.
10. Conflict is messy. It has to be. Otherwise, everything won’t come out.
11. Keep a sense of humor.

its states a lot of points to people's mindset and you get a good grip to a better understanding of people behaviors and how to understand and deal with many attitudes at a workplace and people you come to contact every day in life.
this book clearly shows a refined way of incorporating how to deal with people you can't stand to people whom you feel is not listening to you or your needs... it's worth​ to read twice and dialogue your way towards people through this book. clearly is well written, not all is 100 but its worth a good read. you will feel clear and precise with this book. try it.
