Because Glisic wrote 17 years before Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” introduced bats and Transylvania to the vampire trope, he based his story on the folktales and folk beliefs of villagers in the mountains of western Serbia along the Drina River valley. As such, it represents a treasure trove of ethnographic information and offers insights into authentic vampire lore before the creation of the modern pop culture vampire. The language Glisic employs is the vernacular of the uneducated and illiterate rural population in the mountainous regions of western Serbia along the Drina River valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. In contrast to the heavily ornamented and wordy prose so common among his 19th century contemporaries in Russia and the west, Glisic deliberately wrote in a sparse, plain, and raw style, accurately reflecting the mannerisms of village life and culture, an approach used by Mark Twain in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. Similar to 19th century American author Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle, Glisic mined local folklore to retell the story of the vampire Sava Savanovic. As such, the text presents a wealth of ethnographic material. Glisic offers valuable insights into the roles of women and children in the traditional patriarchal Serbian zadruga, a family-based agricultural cooperative that formed the basis of village life. The role of alcohol in hospitality, causing and settling disputes is also quite evident. And village gossip plays an important role in the everyday life of both men and women. Of particular note is Glisic’s description of the folk beliefs surrounding vampires, how they are found, how they are killed, the forms they take, their physical appearance, etc. In this, Glisic accurately reflects folk beliefs still present today in many rural areas of the Balkans.

Strahinja (Strakh-in-ya) and Radojka (Radojka) were in love ... a love that was forbidden by her father Zivan (Zhi-van). This almost sounds like the opening for many vampire stories that have been written over the years.

This story, however, was written in 1880 and although we see the young couple live happily ever after, it is the course of events which, as you will read, leads to the discovery of the vampire, Sava Savanovic (Sah-vah Sah-vam-o-vich) by Strahinja. The young suitor risks his life to help the people of Zarozje grind their wheat into flour knowing each miller before him had been the victim of a night stalker.

The tale is told about the “vampire” Sava, who frequented the watermill each night for some 90 years to feed on the millers who worked there, and the search by the villagers to find and destroy him.

It is important to note that in order to understand the time and circumstances that this story takes place in, reading the Translator's Notes and the Foreword are necessary as it gives you a greater understanding of the tradition and cultural flavor of the Serbian backdrop of the Village of Zarozje (Za-rozh-ye).

I must admit, having read many books with regard to vampire legend, I wondered whether this tale would take the same road as others have in the description of how the vampire happened on his victims and if the feeding method the vampire used was of a sanguinary nature. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Sava, the vampire, did not feed on the blood of his victims but through forceful touch, sucked out their life essence culminating in the death, by strangulation, of each of his victims.

Thank you, James, for taking the time to translate this wonderful piece of vampire lore. A piece of lore from the very cradle of Vampire legends that belies the popular notion of vampires biting necks and drinking the blood of their prey.

About the Author
Raymond Chang received his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from London University, England and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University.  After doing postdoctoral research at Washington University and teaching for a year at Hunter College, he joined the chemistry at Williams College, where he has taught since 1968.  Professor Chang has written books on spectroscopy, physical chemistry, and industrial chemistry.

It's a standard textbook. Like all textbooks, when they explain something, sometimes they don't explain it thorough enough. I was better off not looking in the textbook or looking online for help. I maybe used it once or twice; the teacher's notes were more helpful.

Wow, terrible explanation of chemical processes. I used this book for my Chem 102 class and ended up utilizing the internet more than the text. Even my professor expressed that parts are poorly written and lack thorough explanation.

I bought it as soon as it came out and I have not been disappointed. Our church elders have been working through revitalization

This is the book that I wish that I had written. It has everything in it that I have gone through as a pastor to churches in transition. I learned about this book from Warren Bird's tweets before it had even been published. I bought it as soon as it came out and I have not been disappointed. Our church elders have been working through revitalization by our district which they call Uprising. Almost everything that we have led the church to change is found in this book. We were on target but this book gave us some ideas that we hadn't thought of yet. We bought a copy for each of our ministry board members and we are studying a chapter each month, coming together to discuss how to implement its principles. If your church is plateaued or in decline for any reason, I recommend that you purchase this book!

Didn't get the edition I wanted

The book description and the book photo don't match. The photo shows the 4th edition. That's what I wanted, and that's what I thought I was buying. But the book that arrived was the 3rd edition. The photo is misleading and should be changed to match the book being sold. To make matters worse, on mobile no edition is stated - all you have to go on is the photo. I have not asked for my money back, but neither do I have the book I wanted.

I have a 30 year old version of this book that my mother used in college. If you want to know how to integrate any weird function, look in here. The best table of integrals i've ever seen, and lots of helpful formulas and references. A terrific reference. I have used this book for virtually all my classes as an Electrical Engineering major.

Excellent lookup table for integrals

This book contains a lot of integrals that don't show up in many other references, which makes it very useful. It's not as extensive as Gradshteyn & Ryzhik, but it's a small and compact reference book that can be carried around easily. Highly recommended if you can find a copy.

I found this book concise and useful. It is full of tips that are useful and great time savers even for someone who visits online forums by MVPs. It brings together new ideas that help to build a robust financial model for management accountants. I work as a professional accountant and found this to be a useful resource for reporting. The book deals with a range of topics from sum functions to validations and reporting models. There is even an online resource that is filled with useful tools and spreadsheets for ease of use.
In summary, this is a book that both beginners and advance users of excel practising in management reporting can benefit from. I wish I could have a digital copy for quick reference when I do not have my book with me at times.

Its Worth Depends on Whether You Have Prior Editions

I've been buying Scott and Matt's fabulous Elements books since version 7, so my review will be different from that of a first-time buyer.

The book states on page xvi that 11 is "one of the biggest upgrades yet" to Elements, however, there is not an awful lot in the book itself that is different from prior editions. In fact, many of the practice images are the same as in prior editions. But did I find enough new information to justify the price on Amazon?

The answer is that I did.

The chief attraction of Scott and Matt's Elements books is that the various sections do not build on previos sections. Therefore, if one's immediate need is to, say, remove dark circles from below a model's eyes, all one needs to do is go to the Contents pages and look at the list of topics for the chapter entitled "Retouch Me" and--Voila!--on p. 257 is the section Removing Dark Circles Under Eyes.

In summary, I would say that for new users of Elements 11 the book is a fabulous buy, even at the full retail price and for those of who have the previous editions it is a good buy (4 stars) at Amazon's steeply-discounted price.

This series is the best of the how-to Elements books I have found.

The other Elements how-to books say, "you can do this and you can do that", but few ever show you how to actually use Elements. This series is a collection of actual lessons you can do. You can even download many of the photos used in the book to do the lessons. Now it is my primary Photoshop Elements resource.

Kelby does it again. Has all the new stuff in there. Recommended where to buy PSE actions and I did so.
Liked the Instagram instructions. The best book out there for photographers who use PSE for restoring photos.
His on line chapters that go along with the book instructions are wonderful. You can't go wrong with this book.

A basic text that is truly hospitality oriented and easy to read and understand

Finally there is a hospitality accounting text that is easy to read - but yet authoritative and applicable to the real world. The author's hospitality experience (educational and vocational) clearly makes this text one of the best in the market. The accounting procedures are based on the use of computers, instead of obsolete manual systems. The financial statement analysis chapters are second to none. Its concluding chapters include credit/debit cards, budgeting, forecasting, internal control of cash, and ends with business math topics critical to the hospitality manager. This is a real hospitality text ---- not some typical accounting text labeled as hospitality.

Useful and loaded with good information

Ok, it's an accounting textbook... but, I was able to use this for 2 courses. . That alone deserves 5 stars! Even if you don't need this for a class and own a small restaurant or similar, it is a great text to familiarize yourself with hospitality accounting.
