The Shock of the Anthropocene: The Earth, History and Us, by Christophe Bonneuil, Jean-Baptiste Fressoz

Dissecting the new theoretical buzzword of the “Anthropocene”

The Earth has entered a new epoch: the Anthropocene. What we are facing is not only an environmental crisis, but a geological revolution of human origin. In two centuries, our planet has tipped into a state unknown for millions of years.

How did we get to this point? Refuting the convenient view of a “human species” that upset the Earth system, unaware of what it was doing, this book proposes the first critical history of the Anthropocene, shaking up many accepted ideas: about our supposedly recent “environmental awareness,” about previous challenges to industrialism, about the manufacture of ignorance and consumerism, about so-called energy transitions, as well as about the role of the military in environmental destruction. In a dialogue between science and history, The Shock of the Anthropocene dissects a new theoretical buzzword and explores paths for living and acting politically in this rapidly developing geological epoch.

Review
“This is the first book to seriously come to terms—philosophically and psychologically as well as scientifically—with the overwhelming planetary transformation implied by the word ‘Anthropocene.’ Bonneuil and Fressoz have done humanity a great service by thinking through the startling issues raised by the fact that our species has launched the entire ecosphere onto a new and frightening trajectory.”
—Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow, Post Carbon Institute

“This bold, brilliantly argued history of the Anthropocene epoch is a corrective to cosy thinking about humanity’s grave disruptions to Earth systems … [Bonneuil and Fressoz] call for a ‘new environmental humanities,’ and a shift away from market-based approaches that feed the beast.”
—Barbara Kiser, Nature

“At a time when the word ‘Anthropocene’ is becoming so fashionable, this well-documented and well-argued book will help readers sort out the various meanings of this most unstable label … The authors show the bewildering varieties of historical actors at work in what is called the ‘environmental crisis.’”
—Bruno Latour, author of Inquiry into Modes of Existence

“A very important book. In this historically rich and meticulously detailed work, Bonneuil and Fressoz show us how to keep our head without losing our heart to technocracy.”
—Timothy Morton, author of Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World

“Cleverly argued and extremely compelling, this book offers a remarkably timely analysis and critique of the very notion of the Anthropocene. It’s widely held that modern industrial societies innocently and ignorantly generated the forces that have wrought such dramatic ecological effects on their world. It’s also believed that only very recently, because of the heroic work of a few visionaries, has this ignorance been overcome and the truth of the Anthropocene at last revealed. Using an astonishing range of sources from climate sciences and economics, history and technology, Bonneuil and Fressoz brilliantly show the utter falsity of this story, and why it matters so much.”
—Simon Schaffer, University of Cambridge

“This revelatory, lucid and daring book rejects the delusions of control implicit in conventional environmentalism, and outlines the enormity of the changes necessary for us to continue to live in the Anthropocene.”
—David Edgerton, King’s College London

“A timely book which firmly grounds history in the stuff that the sciences now tell us about what commodified life does to the planet. This is an essential volume for the project of historical thought and action.”
—McKenzie Wark, author of Molecular Red: Theory for the Anthropocene

“In questioning the idea of an apolitical Anthropocene and raising the spectre of a new self-selecting scientific geocracy, their book should begin a vital discussion. We do need a new politics of the Anthropocene.”
—New Scientist

“Very well written and highly readable …I recommend the book highly. It is currently the most lucid and comprehensive introduction to ‘Anthropocene discourse.’”
—Noel Castree, Antipode

“A wide-ranging essay that combines elements of environmental history, history of science and technology, and economic and intellectual history, while covering an extensive geographic base including British, American, French, and German cases.”
—Public Books

“A detailed, data-driven, and well-argued critique of conventional thought on enormity of the challenges and changes that lay ahead for humanity on an Earth that is irreparably damaged by our actions. It should be a central addition to readers’ climate change libraries.”
—James H. McDonald, New York Journal of Books

“This book attacks such widespread ideas as ‘sustainable development,’ ‘green growth,’ or, still worse, ‘geo-engineering’—the new manifestation of the blind faith in a technological process supposedly now capable of reducing global warming by various clever tricks.”
—La Vie

“Challenges the certainties of our modernity, our mode of development and our view of the world.”
—Libration

“A powerful corrective history designed not to depress but to emancipate our thinking about more sustainable futures.”
—Nick Taylor, Goldsmiths Political Economy Research Centre

“What histories must we write as we learn to inhabit the Anthropocene? This book offers an excellent starting place.”
—Geoscientist

Reflecting on his own quest to find greater meaning in life by synthesizing his scientific training and his developing faith, he offers a blueprint for anyone seeking to reconcile science and religion in their own life. From the Publisher
Code Name God chronicles the amazing life of a man who is from both the east and the west, who finally discovers that "happiness is an inside job" and now invites us to join him on a cosmic dance across that vast expanse where God and the scientists, religion and faith, science and mysticism meet.

One day, Mani Bhaumik was sipping Chateau Lafite Rothschild with Hollywood celebrities enjoying the life of a self-made and successful entrepreneur. The next, he was on his knees before the enormous emptiness of that existence and searching for answers to questions he hadn't asked for a long time. The questions led straight to the root of some well-known mysteries. Einstein famously said that, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Code Name God attempts to elaborate on this profound truth. Dr. Bhaumik's journey through poverty, education, science, and success led to his effort to bridge the gap between modern physics, spirituality and cosmology.

From the Author
As an impressionable teenager, I had the exceptional privilege of living in the camp of a remarkable individual. US Secretary of State George Marshal described him as the spokesman for the conscience of humanity. Albert Einstein pronounced that generations to come will scarcely believe such a man ever walked upon this earth in flesh and blood. His name was Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of independent India. I heard his words of wisdom from his own lips. His words were simple but spoken with the confidence of a man who proclaimed that his life was his message. One particularly became forever etched in my young mind. He said, "One must be the change one wishes to see in the world." What do we want to see in the world? We want to get rid of poverty and have material abundance. We want to get rid of suffering and have an abiding happiness, which seem to require a life rich in spirituality. I have tried to do that in my own humble way, as you will read in Code Name God.

As a skeptical scientist, I also had to find the scientific evidence to support that spirituality is essential for enduring happiness. I have presented the evidence, especially from the study of the biography of the universe and the nature of the quantum world, in terms understandable to non-scientists with the hope that it will change their lives as well.

Code Name God
By Sandy Jones
Mani Bhaumik, the author of Code Name God, was one of the creators of the LASIK eye surgery which we all know has been a huge success in helping many to gain better eye sight; to see better, farther, more clearly. Well, now he has taken his gifts to a new level wherein we all might gain greater spiritual sight too. This book allows us the wider vision necessary to understanding who we are in our relationship to God and the Universe. This book, in its ability to explain Quantum Physics, cosmology, light, singularities, magnetic fields, et al in simple understandable terms, can contribute to the breakthrough needed to remedy many problems in our world today. It is exciting to think that scientific discoveries are bringing the shift in our perception that will ease the myopic, clouded and limited views of God. That, perhaps it will be science, not religion, that allows us new revelations, bringing greater insights that light our pathway to the higher, holy ground. After reading this book I am seeing more clearly, even seeing new dimensions, beyond appearances; yes, all is one and we really are made of the stuff of God. Thank you Mani Bhaumik for your generous contributions to the well being of us all. Profound and enlightening, I hope everyone reads it. Sandy Jones---Ojai, CA.

Code Name God. A fascinating and thought provoking book.
By Roger Bull
When people are serious about their science, more often than not, spirituality is left behind or overtly rejected. This book, which most unusually, is part biography and part scientific investigation into the fundamental laws governing our universe, does not take that path.

Mani Bhaumik begins his book with a fascinating autobiographical account of his upbringing in Bengal before India became independent. He was born on a mud floor of a village hut and might well have died whilst the villagers tried to find someone of the right caste to cut his umbilical cord. As a teenager he was able to spend invaluable time with Mahatma Ghandi, due to his father's commitment to Ghandi's cause of freedom.

He was fortunate in that many noticed his gifts for science and sponsored him all the way through school and university in India and thereafter to America. Once there he was highly influential in laser research, eventually leading a team that developed the Lasik technology used in corneal surgery. This made his fortune.

However, finding the life of wealth a shallow and unsatisfying one, he plunged himself into the latest studies of Cosmology, Quantum physics and Field theory. Once embarked on this section of the book he changes gear to convey vividly, even to the non scientific reader, the full excitement and fundamental importance of such ideas.

Whether you will follow him ultimately to his personal view - that our spiritual yearning for "oneness" is, in fact, a seeking to return to the original source of the Cosmos, when all was indeed one - will be a matter for the individual reader. There is no denying that he makes a most persuasive case for such a profoundly satisfying and beautiful idea.

Mani Bhaumik does not attempt to validate any idea of a personal deity nor does he seek to suggest in any way that he has proved his hypothesis, scientifically or otherwise. He is too honest and subtle a writer for that. Instead, he simply presents the facts to let the universe talk convincingly for itself.

Altogether, a fascinating and thought provoking book.

welcome overview of EVERYTHING
By Jo Cobbett
It was a gift to read of Mani Bhaumik's life and history, and I found the first third of the book completely fascinating. When the scientist mind came in and we were offered a look at the world through a very wide spread net of intelligent perception, my reading slowed down, but my fascination lit up.
This book successfully attempts to weave personal narrative, life passion, spirituality and deep science into a one-size-fits-all-wear-it-anywhere-package. The amount of personal research Dr Bhaumik has done is evident in each page, yet he has brought it into an engaging form: science filled with metaphor and anecdote that keep the reader curious and involved. I can imagine any age level from middle school on up benefitting from this work. There is a genuine desire to share insight; so the book is devoid of the pomposity of rhetoric so often obscuring most scientific treatises.
I had a hard time letting the book go, so i spread it over time. This isn't a light ramble though it reads like one; it is a dissertation on the nature of the universe. I so appreciate the way he includes the reader into the active process of understanding. The final revelation would seem to be that by meditating, (which in itself adds a huge gift to the entire system), one will automatically develop a profound awareness of the answers they seek on the nature of existence.
Rarely has such a vastly over arching viewpoint been so distilled; we go from an understanding of the cosmological history of all, and offer a way to balance the perceptions so that they are no longer elusive abstract phenomena, but are included in our life path.
Thank you for the great ride, highly recommended.

The Rhetoric of Fiction, by Wayne C. Booth

The first edition of The Rhetoric of Fiction transformed the criticism of fiction and soon became a classic in the field. One of the most widely used texts in fiction courses, it is a standard reference point in advanced discussions of how fictional form works, how authors make novels accessible, and how readers recreate texts, and its concepts and terms—such as "the implied author," "the postulated reader," and "the unreliable narrator"—have become part of the standard critical lexicon.

For this new edition, Wayne C. Booth has written an extensive Afterword in which he clarifies misunderstandings, corrects what he now views as errors, and sets forth his own recent thinking about the rhetoric of fiction. The other new feature is a Supplementary Bibliography, prepared by James Phelan in consultation with the author, which lists the important critical works of the past twenty years—two decades that Booth describes as "the richest in the history of the subject."

expand your appreciation of fiction
By Paul Vitols
This thoughtful, probing exploration of how fiction is narrated will make you a better reader and a better writer.

The title's reference to "rhetoric of fiction" makes this book sound obscure and academic, but I found Booth's inquiry into fictional "rhetoric"--that is, the techniques used by authors to persuade readers to accept what they are reading--accessible and insightful. Starting from the old "show vs. tell" debate of fiction-writing (the relative merits of presenting action directly vs. summarizing and explaining), Booth points out that storytelling has always involved the artifice of the author's giving the reader information, as of the inner nature of a character, that is not available to us in real life. We accept the biblical narrator's description of Job as a man who is perfect, upright, and who eschews evil, when we would never accept any such statements made by one living person about another.

Taking examples from a variety of works, from "The Odyssey" to "The Decameron" to "Emma" to "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man", Booth shows how writers' approaches to narration have evolved to the 20th-century situation of authors' attempts to efface the narrator altogether and give the impression that the narrator is not providing any point of view at all (Booth thinks this effort hasn't exactly worked--at least, not without large and perhaps unintended tradeoffs). A recurring touchstone in the book is Henry James, who Booth feels is a particular master of the subtleties of narration and its authority.

Booth is clearly a knowledgeable and perceptive reader, but his tone is common-sense and reader-friendly. He is not an ivory-tower lecturer; he comes across as someone who loves fiction and who enjoys delving into its mysteries. He is disarmingly candid about the lack of critical consensus on just about any aspect of literature, and what this implies about its so-called experts.

Of course, the more of the works you have read that he discusses, the more you can get out of the discussion, although I enjoyed reading about works I had not yet read, and indeed Booth's appreciation of them encouraged me to read some I might not have otherwise (in my case, Jane Austen's "Emma").

One of my main recurring thoughts in reading this book was, "Hm, I never thought about that..." This is a critical work that does not kill works of art through analysis, but rather stimulates a heightened appreciation by looking at new subtleties in fiction. My relationship with fiction--a relationship that is very important to me--was deepened by reading this book.

Every book expresses a set of values
By Evelina
Booth wrote this excellent work to counter the notion that readers can enjoy a novel purely on aesthetic grounds, without regard to the meaning of the book. He counters the notion that meaning does not matter or that it is possible to write without meaning. The book is a response to the theory of deconstructionism. Booth makes the point that every novel expresses an idea of what the author thinks is right and what the author thinks is wrong, even if the author denies any such intention. Many modern works, such as those by Camus, for instance, seem at first reading to be completely bare of endorsing any values. I don't believe in good or bad, they may appear to be saying. But upon closer examination, we see that Camus tells the reader that art is good or that feeling or being alive is good. So he does have a value system. Modern authors may claim that they do not take sides or that they are purely relativistic. But in the end, they all show that they value one thing over another thing. Many modern writers who deny having values turn out in reality to value tolerance or freedom.

Everyone who reads Pride and Prejudice agrees that the author is telling us that it is good that Elizabeth gave up her prejudice and that Darcy gave up his pride. Even if there is a reader who does not agree with such sentiments, he or she cannot deny that Austen does express those sentiments.

Having made the point that a writing must express a value system, Booth goes on to ask what kind of values books generally endorse. He finds that writers almost universally endorse what most of us understand to be the good and dislike what we understand to be the bad. At one point, Booth asks if someone had written an excellent book from the viewpoint of a nazi officer for whom the end of the Third Reich was a tragedy, a book with wonderful language, sentence construction, imagery, etc. would we like it as much as we like Hamlet. Would we regard the fate of the nazi officer, death at the hands of allied troops, as great a tragedy as the fate of Hamlet? Unlikely. And what about a reader who knew nothing about the nazis? What if the writer said that he was not endorsing the nazi viewpoint but was careful not to state that explicitly. Would a description of nazi beliefs or actions be enough to make them repugnant to the reader? Booth's answer is no. He believes that unless the context has a definite message - this is bad (or good)- the writer cannot rely on the reader coming to that conclusion, no matter what the writer puts down on paper. Recording the action say, of putting people in death camps, will not necessarily lead to the conclusion that such is a bad action. The writer, including writers who deny any such intent, guides the reader in what and how to think. (I don't remember Booth talking about it, but has not Gone with the Wind for many decades given readers the impression that slavery was not that bad?)

Booth does not believe that it is possible to record a purely neutral action. Every word that is put to paper stakes out one position or another.

Booth provides a masterly discussion of how literature affects the reader.
Many people, the people among us that apparently have the highest IQs, deny any connection between values and art, much less morality and art. But Booth points out how we feel when we read a book that does not endorse our values. We feel repugnance. Many readers, for instance, find it hard to like Mansfield Park. They find it hard to accept that Austen is endorsing the conservative scheme of morality in the book.

All in all, Booth shows us, in very clear language, how fiction works.

Booth's Most-Recognized Book
By J. F. Stanley
Here is what I wrote on Wikipedia about this book (I am Jstanley01 on the Page History document there):

In what was likely Booth's most-recognized book, The Rhetoric of Fiction, he argued that all narrative is a form of rhetoric.

The book can be seen as his critique of those he viewed as mainstream critics. Critics according to Booth, who cites an abundant array of sources, that beginning roughly with Henry James began to emphasize the difference between "showing" and "telling" in fiction. And who have placed more and more of a dogmatic premium on "showing."

Despite the realistic effects that modern authors have achieved, according to Booth, trying to distinguish narratives in this way is simplistic and deeply flawed. He argued, citing authors of a variety of stripes, that they invariably both show and tell. And he observed that they appear to choose between the techniques based upon decisions about how to convey their various "commitments" along various "lines of interest."

Booth's criticism can be viewed as distinct from traditional biographical criticism (still practiced, especially among popular critics), the new criticism which argued that one can only talk about what the text says, and the modern criticism which argues for the "eradication" of authorial presence. Booth claimed that it is impossible to talk about a text without talking about an author, because the existence of the text implies the existence of an author.

Booth not only argued that, whether or not an author -- as distinct from the narrator of a text -- intrudes directly in a work, that readers will always infer the existence of an author behind any text they encounter. He also claimed that readers always draw conclusions about the beliefs and judgments (and also, conclusions about the skills and "success") of a text's implied author, along the text's various lines of interest:

"However impersonal he may try to be, his readers will inevitably construct a picture of the official scribe who writes in this manner -- and of course that official scribe will never be neutral toward all values. Our reaction to his various commitments, secret or overt, will help to determine our response to the work."[1]

This implied author (a widely-used term that Booth coined in this book; who he also called an author's "second self"[2]) is the one who "chooses, consciously or unconsciously, what we read; we infer him as an ideal, literary, created version of the real man; he is the sum of his own choices"[3]

Booth also spent several chapters -- which include numerous referrals to and citations from widely-recognized works of fiction -- describing the various effects that implied authors achieve along the various lines of interest that he identifies, and the pitfalls they fall into, depending upon whether or not the implied author provides commentary, and upon the degree to which a story's narrator is reliable or unreliable, personal or impersonal.

Booth detailed three "Types of Literary Interest" that are "available for technical manipulation in fiction":

"(1) Intellectual or cognitive: We have, or can be made to have, strong intellectual curiosity about "the facts," the true interpretation, the true reasons, the true origins, the true motives, or the truth about life itself. (2) Qualitative: We have, or can be made to have, a strong desire to see any pattern or form completed, or to experience a further development of qualities of any kind. We might call this kind "aesthetic," if to do so did not suggest that a literary form using this interest was necessarily of more artistic value than one based on other interests. (3) Practical: We have, or can be made to have, a strong desire for the success or failure of those we love or hate, admire or detest; or we can be made to hope for or fear a change in the quality of a character. We might call this kind "human," if to do so did not imply that 1 and 2 were somehow less than human."[4]

In the 1983 edition of The Rhetoric of Fiction, in which a lengthy addendum to the original 1961 book was published, Booth outlined various identities taken on by both authors and readers: The Flesh-and Blood Author, the Implied Author, the Teller of This Tale, the Career Author, and the "Public Myth"; and, the Flesh-and-Blood Re-Creator of Many Stories, the Postulated Reader, the Credulous Listener, the Career Reader, and the Public Myth about the "Reading Public."[5]

From the Author
Foreword by Mike Nefkens, Executive Vice President, Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
We are on the midst of a major market disruption. Cloud, mobility, big data and security are converging and how enterprises respond will determine success or failure. Turning game-changing ideas into value faster than competitors is no longer a nice to have - it is the only way to survive and thrive. Companies like Uber and Airbnb didn't exist until a year or two ago and they are already transforming their respective industries. We no longer have the luxury of time. We need to drive continuous transformation in our enterprise at the pace being set by these market making competitors, and radically shift to the way customers want to do business, or we risk losing them.
All of this is creating a true inflection point for executives around the world - disrupt or be disrupted. The next wave or risky proposition, only the future will tell
By atmj
This is a business book more than an a book on computer convergence and the Internet of things. It is about businesses hiring out their IT services to companies that specialize in IT, rather than managing this capability in-house. In the author’s words, instead they should be focusing on their core-competency and instead outsourcing for things that are not. I know in the past few years I have seen large companies outsource cleaning, security, cafeterias etc. But, how vulnerable would this leave a business if their critical services are being handled by another? Price gouging comes to mind as does system failures etc. But, on the same token, so does obsolescence. Over the years I have seen various large companies depending on outdated software and employees struggling to manage new technologies coming in. If these could be hired out, it might be cheaper. But, that still takes a lot of faith.

While the idea is captivating, another thing that gives me pause is that the author writing about this works for a company that provides these services. About halfway in, I got to thinking this was a long sales pitch. Mind you, I don’t disagree with him, and I’m certainly not qualified to critique the idea, but being the skeptic my first thought was, there is additional motivation for this book.

The author makes a good point when it comes to security and experience. Who would you trust more with personal data, employees and servers at Home depot or other such business, or one whose living depends on providing online security? A good point indeed. I know in my own experience often the IT personnel in a company that does not focus on IT services is far from the highest skilled and often employees with a frazzled computer are left wanting or with long waits for resolutions.

As a relatively forward thinking person I have a lot vested in cloud services: Google Docs and pictures, Amazon Prime and Pictures, Dropbox, Evernote, On-line banking and entertainment, as well as Yahoo, Gmail, even Facebook, and other cloud items. Many of which I don’t pay for, but still personally depend on. My life is in the cloud. So this is the future. It feels risky for me and I would dare say also for businesses that have always prided themselves in owning what keeps their business running. But like outsourcing things like security and even subcontracting parts of their operation this might just be the next wave that makes the difference in success or failure.

A brilliant book
By Joseph Oppenheim
This book discusses the intersection of Big Data, the Cloud and Mobility and how it represents not just a new trend or an incremental step in technology, but an "Inflection Point," such that it makes nearly all businesses obsolete unless they transform their IT immediately.

Basically, computers and software should be seen as a utility service, provided by another company that has as its core competency, providing and maintaining such systems for a reasonable periodic service fee. Then, the company should stick to its core competencies. so, no need for its own data center, computers, existing software and staff to manage updates.

Also part of this inflection point are Apps. The internet is now really a collection of applications, such that one could start a new business in a short time without prior knowledge, using Apps. So, incremental will not work now, since competition can now develop and improve super fast. A key word now is disintermediation. massive loss of jobs, basically because of elimination of middlemen.

This SaaS (software as a service) and the disintermediation resulting is amplified with the Internet of Things with machines communicating with machines via the Cloud, bypassing the need for additional jobs, and steps for ordinary humans outside the workplace.

The book also addresses how one can better evaluate stocks for their personal portfolio, considering the above. The popular metric of EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) is worthless because now, this excludes the very things which could make the company uncompetitive in this new environment. Instead, ROIC (return on invested capital), is perhaps now the premier metric to be used, along with cash flow.

Also, the book covers MDM (mobile device management), very important to let company employees use their own mobile device, maybe only just partially subsidized by the company since it also can be used for personal stuff. The key being simplicity.

The book also mentions mobile middleware, which allows Apps to communicate with Apps.

The beauty of this book is how it ties together these very important concepts in such a neat way, making an easy and fast reading book. I heartily recommend it.

Easy to understand analysis of IT trends
By TJS
Inflection Point: How the Convergence of Cloud, Mobility, Apps, and Data Will Shape the Future of Business examines how businesses can leverage the trends occurring, and changing, every day in the information technology (IT) field. It examines the success and failures of businesses impacted by inflection points. Written in terms the average layman can understand, Inflection Point is a fascinating look at the birth and transformation of IT trends in the business world.

I couldn’t help but compare Inflection Point to Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point, which examines trends and why they become popular in society and popular culture. In much the same way, Scott uses former Intel CEO Andy Grove’s definition of an inflection point: “an event or a series of interrelated events that result in a significant change in the progress of a company, an industry, a sector, an economy, or even a nation,” which is very similar to Gladwell’s definition of a tipping point: “that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.” While Gladwell examines this phenomena from a sociological perspective, Stawski examines it from an IT and business perspective.

Scott breaks down how companies can anticipate inflection points within their respective industries and how they can stay ahead of the trend wave. Additionally, he provides real-world examples of businesses that have succeeded or failed, based on their ability to recognize and adapt to inflection points. He highlights steps taken by companies whose CEOs or COOs have embraced changes in technology and taken their companies to the next level while their competition floundered and failed.

He provides a detailed explanation and description of cloud computing and encourages companies not to worry about ‘how’ it works, but, instead, focus on the fact it works and what the expected outcome should be. This is good advice for the average person as well as the CEOs and COOs of the business world. You don’t have to understand combustible engines to get in your car and drive.

Scott also does a very good job of addressing the issue of security with regard to cloud computing. In the age of compromised data, when everyone is affected by the IT breaches of Target and the government’s Office of Personnel Management, security should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. He highlights that the majority of data breaches have occurred against businesses employing the traditional IT model. By breaking down the different cloud computing models, he explains how security can be leveraged at each level of usage.

Although written from a business perspective, Inflection Point is an extremely useful analysis of changing IT trends for the average person. Scott uses simple, easy-to-understand language to explain the current trends within the IT enterprise – cloud computing, Software as a Service, and Big Data. He incorporates real-life experiences from his personal life as a hobby sailor, as well as his professional life as a consultant, to draw analogies between how we use IT in our personal life and how businesses can use IT to further their interests.

From Booklist
Cade Carlsen's family manufactures the world's smelliest and most effective catfish bait. Because he sometimes helps with the manufacturing process, Cade smells pretty ripe himself much of the time. Fortunately, his friend Leigh Ann has a sinus condition, which makes Cade's presence bearable to her. Leigh Ann narrates this enjoyable yarn about Cade's attempt to disrupt Missouri's biggest catfish tournament, which becomes an ever-burgeoning tall tale as it moves along. Things begin after Cade falls under the spell of Martina Hyde and her "Fish Feel Pain" antifishing campaign, which gradually goes spectacularly awry, culminating in a massive explosion that is caused by a 2,000-pound cast-iron catfish and unleashes a stink for miles around. Many kids will enjoy the fishing lore, eccentric diversions, and exaggerated humor in this whopper of a yarn. Todd Morning

About the Author
For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Ralph Taggart, Former Chair of Biological Sciences at Michigan State University, Ralph Taggert is now the chair of Geological Sciences. Professor Taggart, known for his outstanding research in Paleobotany, has taught the general biology course for over 20 years.

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr has been responsible for the incredible art in the Starr biology textbooks for many years. She has worked at as a research scientist at The Scripps Institute as well as several other institutions. Her area of expertise is biochemistry, molecular and cell biology.
