Where's the Guanxi?!

Microsoft's PR Department couldn't have written thicker, more syrupy, praise for Microsoft. Guanxi is the chinese word for mutually beneficial relationships, it's a complex concept that involves respect, reciprocality, and a certain deference to the person with more authority. It is not covered in this book. Rather, this is a book that paints a super happy face on a long process and smooths out or ignores the rough edges. I recommend doing an Amazon search on Guanxi and reading some of the other books on business in China, like the China Dream, if you want a clearer picture of Guanxi. If you want the Disneyfied version of Microsoft's research lab, this is the book for you.

worthwhile reading on China, Micro$oft or research innovation

I liked the book. For several reasons: first it is a good read, well written, fast paced and interesting on several levels.

The first is chronological (how the books is structured), a history of Microsoft's research involvement in China. The second is a window into some things about the culture in China and how it is different than Western. this is the title of the book-guanxi. The third is a higher level, how do you encourage innovation, how do you harness the best in a culture to corporate culture and making money, how do you do good research in a field like computers, constantly changing, with lots of very bright, motivated people working in it.

It is a good book, worthwhile to read for a number of reasons, the least of which is that these topics will impact everyone on earth to a greater or lesser extent over their lifetimes, just a matter of survival.

The final feeling i have is that my kids simply can not compete with chinese kids, not for educational motivation, not for desire to get ahead and do good while making lots of money. it is a wakeup call to American education and political structures that the primacy of American scientific research and the engine that it has been driving the economy is no longer restricted to smaller percentages of the world population but is now literally global.

I met Buderi and Huang on their book tour, and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. What a tale they tell, as they show how Microsoft early on, embraced the world of talent coming up through Chinese universities and turned it to the company's advantage. I especially like the stories of how young Chinese researchers just out of university found themselves in Redmond, presenting for Bill Gates.

China is hungry and rich in talent, not just markets, and this book shows why.

Loved this funny, smart, thought-provoking book!!

I loved this book! It's REALLY funny, but still surprisingly grounded in history and facts. So, it's perfect for both history buffs and people just wanting a good laugh. I particularly love how Wilser made people and events from hundreds of years ago seem completely contemporary with modern references. It makes me want to read more biographies written like this, ideally by Wilser!!!

PS - And, don't be deterred if you're not into the musical or music ... it won't affect your enjoyment a bit.

A treat

As a middle aged woman who has read all of Chernow's books, I thought this clever look at how to apply Hamiltonian principles to everyday modern life would be a bit too GQ for me. I'm glad I stuck with it, not only is the author in command of his subject, he had me in stitches. It's a refreshing and palatable read for all ages and levels of interest in the founding fathers.

I loved this book so much

I loved this book so much, I don't have enough words to describe how I feel about it. This book is the perfect mix of history and humor. The author's voice is so funny, you can't help but actually laugh out loud in multiple parts. I read this while I was visiting NYC to see Hamilton the musical and it couldn't have been a better pairing. If you cant quite stomach the length and depth of Chernow's biography this one would be the perfect alternative or accompanying book if you've already read Chernow.

Yet, until now, there has been no comprehensive treatment of how Germany and Austria-Hungary - two of the key belligerents - conducted the war and what defeat meant to them. Much of the writing on the war has hallowed the tactical and operational effectiveness of the German army. Yet Germany lost the conflict. In tackling this paradox, Herwig shows how greatly the Central Powers suffered from inadequate resources and an incapacity to manage effectively what they had. He also shows with clarity just how much of Germany's effort was expended in sustaining not only its own war effort but also that of its ally, without any corresponding subordination of Vienna to Berlin, as the economic and military realities required. But it is in his reassessment of Germany's military effectiveness that he offers the most fundamental corrective. For readers accustomed to criticisms of the various Allied commanders, Herwig's examination of the German military effort will have uncanny echoes. An excellent book

The First World War destroyed the old imperial system that had governed Europe. Prior to the war central Europe was dominated by the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Imperial Russia. As a result of the war these countries were torn apart by social revolution with Communism taking control in Russia and Fascism in Germany.
Herwig in his stunning book explains why. The stunning incompetence of all of the participants in this conflict were breathtaking. The military incompetence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was such that they had lost close to one million men in the first year of the war. However conventional histories fail to look at the way countries managed their economies. Neither Germany nor Austro-Hungary were able to feed their populations during the war or even turned their mind to it.
The war years were a time when the normal people in those counties slowly starved to death, suffering from a range of diseases brought on by poor nutrition to witness their husbands and children taken away to die in huge numbers at the front.
The book is a stunning inditement of all of the great powers of the time. The First World War is the first cause of a lot which has gone wrong with this century.

The focus of Holger Herwig's book is from the perspective of Germany and its principle ally, Austria-Hungary. Herwig implicitly argues Germany/Austria-Hungary lost the war because of incompetent generalship, and mismanagement of inadequate resources needed to wage war on a massive scale. Specifically, Herwig blames the failure on the Dual-Monarchy, its unwillingness to subordinate and cooperate in conjunction with its more powerful ally, Germany. Herwig downplays the myth of German military might and attempts to demonstrate that not even Germany, who had showed such greatness as a military power in the latter half of the 19th Century was ready for 20th Century style warfare. Herwig utilizes a chronological method and highly readable narrative style throughout. Generally, Herwig incorporates the standard top-down military/ diplomatic history approach describing causes of the war, mobilization, battles and leaders, major campaigns and results of the war. To a lesser degree, Herwig takes a look at the affects of war on society with such themes as hunger, disease, labor on the home front and gender issues. Overall, Herwig builds his argument by consulting archival sources previously waved over by the "Anglo-centric preoccupations of English language historians" (Strachan, quoted in Herwig, p. xiii). The author admits that a substantial amount of evidence dealing with the Great War was destroyed during bombing raids in WWII. He points out, however, that the reunification of Germany in 1989 has made available documents never before considered by western historians. Herwig relys heavily upon official histories of the war, mainly, Reichsarchiv's Der Weltkrieg 1914-1918, state papers focusing on other German states besides Prussia, and the official history of the Austrian-Hungarian Army. This source material is gleaned from many world famous archival institutions such as: Bundesarchiv (Koblenz), Bundesarchiv-Milit�rarchiv (Freiburg), and Vienna's Haus-, Hof- und Staataarchiv, Politisches Archiv and �sterreichisches Staatsarchiv. The author also utilizes diaries and memoirs; dissertations and scholarly articles; and secondary sources assembled in perhaps one of the most impressive bibliographies in recent military literature. Although highly readable, the author tends to be too general at times. For example, the Germans advanced through Belgium in a few sentences without any mention of the Belgium resistance or the Germany atrocities committed there in reprisal. One may notice that not once did he mention the scholarship of the historian Barbara Tuchman. In describing campaigns and battles, In contrast to John Keegan's _First World War_, Herwig focuses too much on the top echelons and rarely gets below corps level when recounting troop movements and engagements. Intermittently, Herwig fails to cite sources, particularly when quoting statistics, casualty figures, and troop strength (there are examples where he does quote statistical evidence though). Unlike Martin Gilbert's _First World War_ Herwig succeeds in illustrating the role of Austria-Hungary to great affect. The social/economic aspects of the war are handled adequately without diminishing the 'old style' military history narrative. The book's readability is one of its greatest strengths. Even a one-volume history of The First World War can be daunting, however Herwig captures and holds the reader's attention. On the whole, this work is a valuable addition to WWI literature.

world war 3 getting thru this book

i am a ww1 avid reader. i have 20 books about it, at least. i was all excited to be getting the definitive history, i knew would have two more volumes. somewhere in the first third of the book i began to loose interest as i was aware of all this already, perhaps, or the writer just wasn't holding my interest. if this will be one of your first books ever read about WW1, go for it! if you are an expert already, hold off as there is nothing new here, sorry to say. drquincy

Good Book to Start Learning to Use for Faces and Figures

This book was bought because I have no background and only a bit of self-taught experience in sculpture with clay. So far, I am still on the second project, a bust of a little girl named Amy. (See the picture of the dust jacket.) I have had several false starts, but I keep improving, so I have hopes. The book combines instruction in both the Mudbox program as well as the artistic end---proportions, shapes, anatomy, etc. I believe that I will be able to produce a good likeness.

My only disappointment is that the next project is a full sculpture of a figure of a monster, rather than a normal human being. I realize that the program was developed originally to create just such creatures, and perhaps they will be more to the taste of other purchasers. I think there is still something to be learned in the exercise, so I plan to continue on with it.

The book covers an earlier release of Mudbox, so there a few differences, but they are not so great that the book is not helpful. However, I would suggest that they and other publishers of similar books adopt the practice of the Nolo Patent It Yourself books; Between editions, they publish errata and addenda to the latest edition on their website. This is a smart business practice, because not only does it encourage purchase of a book that may be a generation out-of-date, but it encourages visits to their website.

This Technique goes Beyond Creativity! Well Done

This book, Digital Sculpting with Mudbox, by from what I have been exposed to so far, is way beyond my "old school" creativity and adds a wealth of information causing a new unlimited amount of uses. The book is well written but even better, very well illustrated. Bridgette Mongeon and Mike de la Flor explain techniques in a very palatable language, a nice blend between art and technology yet intriguing. Disappointed!

I am disappointed! I read his book Healing Psoriasis full of so much good advice and it has helped my husband so much. Yes, we have had to make some big diet changes to help him with his Psoriatic Arthritis and my son with his Eczema, but it works if you follow the advice in the book. The problem with this cookbook is most of the ingredients are ones you are NOT allowed to have, so I have to figure out substitutes. Why buy a cookbook you have to alter to make work when I have plenty of cookbooks on my shelf I can do that with? Plus there are tons of recipes on the web if you search for nightshade free. I was hoping this cookbook would be full of recipes following the guidelines in his book and too many of them don't. So, this cookbook is pretty much worthless to me.

This book is amazing! Literally wverything you need to know and do to cure psoriasis . I have been doing exactly what dr pagano says in this book and it's been 9 weeks today and my psoriasis is 90% better and almost gone completely . I hAd it all over my scalp and ears and legs and it is virtually gone. It's so light in color you can hardly see it and it doesn't itch! I feel better and look better. I have had psoriasis for 17 yrs and now for the first time ever after having tried everything, every topical cream and diet regimen , it is nearly gone! Get this book and follow what he says and you will be healed too!

I was told I was one of the worst cases ever seen by my doctor. I spent over ten years taking methotrexate and the doctors asked me to start taking injections. I bought this book instead and followed the diet and in three months my skin was mostly clear. I would recommend this book to every Dermatologist in the country and absolutely to every Psoriasis sufferer.

This is a preschool book.

Maybe the standards have changed, but this book seems more like a preschool book than a Kindergarten book. It focuses mostly on letters A-Z and numbers 1-10 there is no addition or subtraction and only a couple sight words like A and I. In my area Kindergarteners are expected to know far more.

I got this workbook at the request of my sons preschool. I have seen several reviews saying their children were too advanced for the book and it wasn't helpful. My son is 4 and still learning to write out lower case letters. He knows his alphabet, and can word identify a few words and write out the alphabet in upper case but he is not reading just yet. This is a excellent starting tool, and honestly I can't imagine any 3-5 year old that has no need for practicing writing, but kudos to the parents that pushed their children to that level. I am pleased with the level it is for my son, and he enjoys the book. I would recommend it for 3-5 age group.

Great supplement for our homeschool curriculum! My 5 year old has been using it for several months now and really enjoys the games and puzzles! Will probably get the first grade book before she finishes kindergarten as she has advanced so quickly!
