This volume presents topics in probability theory covered during a first-year graduate course given at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The second part of the book mainly deals with dependent random variables, particularly martingales and Markov chains. Topics include standard results regarding discrete parameter martingales and Doob's inequalities. The standard topics in Markov chains are treated, i.e., transience, and null and positive recurrence. A varied collection of examples is given to demonstrate the connection between martingales and Markov chains. Additional topics covered in the book include stationary Gaussian processes, ergodic theorems, dynamic programming, optimal stopping, and filtering. A large number of examples and exercises is included. The book is a suitable text for a first-year graduate course in probability.

A gem

I know which books I value when I end up buying a second copy after losing the first one. This book gives a complete overview of the basis of probability theory with some grounding in measure theory, and presents the main proofs. It is remarkable because of its concision and completeness: visibly prof Varadhan lectured from these notes and kept improving on them until we got this gem. There is not a single sentence too many, yet nothing is missing.
For those who don't know who he is, Varadhan stands as one of the greatest probabilists of all time. Learning probability from him is like learning from Aristotle.
Varadhan has two other similar volumes one covering stochastic processes the other into the theory of large deviations (though older than this current text). The book on Stochastic Processes should be paired with this one.

The distilled core - an ideal first text for measure theoretic probability

This is an ideal text for first year graduate probability. Take Billingsley, which is several times bulkier, and distill the core concepts that one should away from the course, and that is Varadhan. Beautifully written, a joy to read, and occasionally even a useful reference to have on the desk to go back to when formalizing proofs for publication.

For brevity's sake though, quite a few ideas have been left to exercises, and I am not sure if this is a text that an uninitiated can learn from without having the luxury of being in a class. These are course notes that Varadhan used to teach the course himself, so probably the intended audience is students taking a course - not self study.

Very succint

Varadhan is very succint, doesn't give too many details. I didn't use this book too much. My lecturer was Amir Dembo and his notes are pretty good (exact opposit of Varadhan - much longer and go over all details and more).

And old hand at this...

I've been keeping freshwater fish (and just about everything else that ever tooled about the freshwater environment at one time or another) for a long, LONG time, and I've found this text to be as authoritative and reader-friendly as books can get. Simply stated, the novice can learn all he or she needs to about a species or genera of fish in order to successfully keep that species in captivity, while the advanced hobbyist has at his or her fingers an unparalleled resource text in this book. As an expert whose knowledge is certainly limited, I've found this book to be a sort of catch-all text that answers most any question I might have about the freshwater species of fishes. More so even than that, I consider this book a reference text in that when I go to the local fish shop and I see something I've never seen before, I can come home, reference my Encyclopedia of Freshwater Fishes, and come away with a solid understanding of the species that I just encountered for the first time; I don't have to rely on the "guess and pray" information given me by the pet shop's clerk, I can simply rely on this book to fill in the gaps and bridge the information-gulfs that stand between me and my chosen species of captive fish.

While the above information is simply my amateur opinion on the information the text provides, the following is my professional take on the book as published work. My name is Phil Purser, and many of you may have read my books on Moray Eels, Green Treefrogs, or Garter & Ribbon Snakes. I've been writing on fish & reptiles/amphibians for over a half-decade, and I know what is good and what sucks when it comes to the pet trade. I've read myriad books by "authors" who couldn't find their noses in the dark, and I've read authoritative books by the leading minds of the field, and I can honestly say that, after reading this book from the front cover to the back, this text is one book that will stay one my personal shelves for years and years to come. The information in it is up-to-date, accurate, and timeless (of course nomenclature can change, but the care of each species is pretty well fixed). When you've got all the information you'll ever need in one book, why would you ever reach for another?

The authors of this book are some of the best in the field...better even than myself. Despite my decades of experience studying and writing about fishes, I still defer my questions and inquiries to men such as Glen Axelrod and Brian Scott. Any hobbyist who keeps his or her fingers on the pulse of the freshwater aquarium hobby will attest to the expertise of these scholars; they know their stuff!

I guess what I'm saying is that if an old expert like me can enjoy and reference a book so much as I have this text, then ANYONE who is even remotely interested in the keeping and understanding of freshwater fishes can certianly learn from and relish a book like this one. I honestly believe that a book to rival this one in scope and depth of knowledge will be written for a long, long time to come.

Disappointing

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

Best in a long time

I've been anticipating the release of this text for a while, and, now that I own a copy of it, I can say without reservation that it is one of the best encyclopedias to freshwater fosh that I own; and I own MANY such texts. In the old days of fish books, the publisher would simply recycle old information and slap a new cover on it in order to sell it as a "new" title. This book breaks that mold. It's authored by renowned fish experts Axelrod & Scott, and the range of information it provides is AWESOME!! Most books on this topic give scant coverage to a broad range of species, but this text gives you a double-handful of information on a LOT of species. Everything fro Bichirs to Cichlids, from Characins to Corydorias, from Poecilidae to... You name it, it's here!

The point is, this book is a solid text from cover to cover. It has a few typos in it but, hell, I just read Stephen King's latest book and I found more than a few grammar mistakes in it, too. So anyone who is a devout fish hobbyist, and who can overlook one or two grammatical mistakes, will definitely be patting themselves on the back for purchasing this book. In the few weeks that I've owned it, I've already used it as reference material more than all my other fish books combined. You cannot go wrong with this atlas of freshwater fishes.

Gratuitous Power Intoxication

The reason why I gave this book two stars is that the narration is tainted by a certain mean-heartedness and lack of compassion for the submissive/slave.

It is my understanding that the Mistress who takes on a submissive/slave also takes responsibility for his well-being. It is also my understanding that the slave is still fundamentally a human being and not an object.

The narration demonstrates some of the pitfalls that Masters and Mistresses must certainly beware of: particularly, gratuitous power intoxication without an equivalently strong sense of basic human responsibility.

This book is written from the point of view of Mistress Parker. She describes in great detail why she decided to dominate and feminize her husband when he confessed his long suppressed desire to cross dress. Women who are faced with a similar situation will gain insight into the motivation of many cross dressers and understand why Mistress Parker chose her particular resolution to this issue.

The book is well written, informative and full of ingenious ideas of how Mistress Parker exerts and maintains control over her maid, Merri. I enjoy the photos of Merri in her maid uniform scattered throughout the book. Clearly, Mistress Parker has been very successful in creating an obedient and feminine maid.

I highly recommend this book to would-be Dommes and the submissive men who serve them.

A Sissy's View of My Husband is My Maid

I enjoyed reading this book and appreciated the realism of Merri's development. As a sissy maid myself, I can tell you that the story of Merri's development has a very authentic feel to it. In my case, under the guidance of Miss Barbara, the process was slower and more evolutionary, so I can only imagine how poor Merri must have felt at first. But I recognized many of the situations, feelings and emotions from my own experience and so felt a connection with Merri and with the story. I wish I could communicate with Merri and swap sissy maid notes!

Miss Janice tells the story in a straight forward way that is also entertaining and informative. I especially appreciate how she stresses the benefits to women of having a sissy maid. This is so important for women to know. If every woman that caught her hubby engaging in sissy activity could read this book, many marriages would be saved and many Mistresses and sissy maids could live happily ever after!

Mindset in Motion

Jan Koum and Brian Acton are the founders of WhatsApp, the world’s most famous messaging app. Its mission is to “empower people through technology and communication, no matter who they are, or where they live.”

Their remarkable journey is a hallmark of courage, willpower, and relentless determination. In a Guardian newspaper interview, Acton describes the relationship as “yin and yang.” He says, “I’m the na�ve optimist, he’s more paranoid. I pay attention to bills and taxes, he [Koum] pays attention to our product.”

Koum was born in a rural village outside of Kiev, Ukraine. At the age of sixteen, during much political strife and instability, his family made the agonizing decision to flee their country and move to Mountain View, California. Koum’s father could not join them and was left behind. Koum told one interviewer, “I grew up in a society where everything you did was eavesdropped on, recorded, snitched on.” Koum’s difficult childhood experience under Soviet surveillance inspired the WhatsApp messaging service.

Koum and Acton are no strangers to failure and rejection. In summer 2009, Acton was looking for a job. For more than eleven years, the Stanford computer science graduate had been working at Yahoo, the social networking business, in various engineering roles.

Facebook turned me down. It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life’s next adventure.

Whatever you choose to believe, life is anything but predictable. Just five years later, in a miraculous twist of fate, Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion.

To put the deal in perspective, at the time of purchase, the hotel chain Marriott International had over 120,000 staff, a twenty-two-year history, and a market cap of over $15.4 billion. WhatsApp has only fifty-five employees, although I hear they are hiring.

How did this unlikely pair become two of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet? The answer: They had harnessed the leader’s mindset.

10X Thinking

Astro Teller is a British entrepreneur, scientist, and thinker who is widely credited as one of the pioneers of 10X thinking (10X). He heads up Google X, a futuristic lab responsible for hyper-ambitious projects such as Google Glass, balloon-powered Wi-Fi networks, and the infamous Google self-driving car. According to legend, his business card describes him as “Captain of Moon Shots.”

His story inspired me to embark on a journey to unlock the anatomy of a leader’s mindset at many of the world’s most exciting organizations, from young startups to global giants.

Along the way, I uncovered some surprising insights about how the smartest leaders, teams, and entrepreneurs think and what they do to inspire change and move forward. In an interview with Wired magazine, Teller explains the power of 10X thinking: “There are tests that you can apply to see if you’re thinking big enough. The easiest one, the mantra that we use at Google X, is ten times rather than ten percent better, you tend to work from where you are: if I ask you to make a car that goes 50 miles a gallon, you can just retool the engine you already have. But if I tell you it has to run on a gallon of gas for 500 miles, you’re going to have to start over. That causes you to approach the problem so differently that weirdly, counter-intuitively, it’s often easier to make something ten times better--because perspective-shifting is just that much more powerful than hard work and resources being thrown at problems via traditional, well-tried paths.”

Imagine leading your organization up to ten times better than you do today or increasing your team’s success tenfold. 10X thinking is the golden thread that links all great leaders and is at the core of the leader’s mindset.

My challenge had been set. I wanted to answer the question, “What if any anyone could apply the principles of 10X to their mindset, their team and their leadership?”
