I got aggravated with Growing Young
By mctuftab05
I have read Dr. Gitterle's book and am currently following the program he recommends. He offers sound information for the lay reader (no technical jargon) that is backed by fresh, factual, evidence-based science. For that I am very appreciative. My personal physician is a wellness-oriented individual who continually reads, researches, and loves to learn. It was my doctor who informed me of the book, so I immediately bought it. I have also watched a 90-minute video of Gitterle addressing a small group in Texas. This served me as a good follow-up review of the core of Gitterle's book, although he does not present his supplement suggesions in that video. For the content of the book, my subjective feelings of better health, and Gitterle's sincere approach to helping the public to help themselves, I most heartily give 3 stars.

One star was omitted because of the presentation of the (apparently self-published) book. There is no index and the printing font chosen kind of d-r-a-g-s the information across the pages. The informative content could have easily been condensed by at least a third of the number of pages, perhaps even in the form of a brochure. Further, there are pages upon pages of redundancy in the volume. My best conclusion is there must not been an editor for the manuscript. There is a wretched excess of extraneous and misplaced commas in the body of work. Those commas appear to have been liberally sprinkled onto every page from a large spice container. My Business English and Technical Writing instructors would have eaten Gitterle's lunch if he handed them this book for review before it went to publication. I forced myself to finish reading Growing Young because I trust his medical expertise and I truly wanted to learn what he could teach me about anti-aging strategies. Unfortunately I could only do so with much grimacing, clenching of teeth, and grousing about an M.D. presenting such a poor manuscript.

It was a relief to finally get to the meat (pun intended) of the book where he mentions specific diet, exercise, and supplement changes to incorporate into the reader's everyday life. I will say as another plus that these are simple, safe, easy to obtain, well explained, and best of all, relatively inexpensive for the average adult Ms./Mr. John/Jane Doe. My personal copy of the book has been lent out but I remember adding up the anticipated expenses as per the author's suggestions. The total was around $130 per month for the supplements. But of course the dietary suggestions (similar to the ideas of an insulin resistance recovery diet) are subject to individual choice, so no dollar value was suggested for diet. What he recommends are wholesome and easy to find foods and food categories. No new or exotic foods need be sought out or be concerned about.

I held back the fifth star for the unabashed good-buddy cronyism evinced in reviews here on Amazon as well as in Gitterle's book. It is nothing but "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." For example, Joe Vitale wrote the intro pages to Gitterle's book and gives a strongly favorable review here. I remember that Dr. Gitterle was a contributor to one of Joe Vitale's books, "Life's Missing Instruction Manual." Those are the kind of things about a book that make me go, "Hmmmmmm." Also, I found out after watching the online video presentation that many of the people in the audience at that lecture were Dr. Gitterle's friends and/or patients......."Hmmmmmm." (Joe, was that you sitting in at the Austin IONS lecture?)

Despite my criticisms, I also recommend - I could even say I "challenge" - any and everybody to get your hands on Dr. Gitterle's knowledge-based system to reverse and prevent aging - from the cellular level to the level of the whole human organism, that is to say, "You and me." It is that good.

You may rather download the text of the book, unabridged, in Doctor Gitterle's own voice. I have listened to the preview and am considering doing the same. That way I will neither have to look at all the commas nor have to listen to Gitterle say, "Uh" far too frequently as he did in the off-the-cuff slide/video presentation online. I understand Gitterle is currently writing a sequel to Growing Young. I'm going to hope against hope that it is better written.

This has given me my life back
By patlani
At the risk of sounding overly dramatic and cliche, this book has literally given me my life back.

I originally bought this book to read for a paper I was writing on current antiaging practices, and I found the information so intriguing that rather than simply write about Dr. Gitterle's ideas, I implemented them.

For 14 years, I struggled with many chronic issues of fatigue, exhaustion, poor memory, brain fog, inadequate/disturbed sleep, weight gain -- just to name a few issues. I went to one MD after another and had many lab tests performed, yet I was always told that I was "normal" and that there was nothing wrong with me. My body, however, was telling me differently.

I began studying holistic health and was able to make many improvements in my health. I felt better, but I wasn't quite back to "normal" for me. After a life-threatening emergency, I was diagnosed with stress-induced Type 2 diabetes and have been working diligently to reverse this diagnosis. So, when I came upon Dr. Gitterle's book, having so many health issues to deal with, I thought this approach of working with the body's physiological systems to rejuvenate myself at the cellular level was just what I needed to put me over the top. And, boy, was I right!

I have been following his program for a year now, and I can honestly say that I now have the energy I had when I was in my early 30s (and that was twenty years ago!). Even better is the fact that I am now pre-diabetic instead of diabetic, and I am sure that as I continue with Dr. Gitterle's program, I can reverse the diabetes entirely.

I can't thank Dr. Gitterle enough for sharing his knowledge. The supplements are fantastic, as well as affordable; the diet and exercise guidelines were already a part of my life, but even if one has to institute these, they are easy to follow and maintain; and the guidelines for good sleep have truly had a positive effect on my energy and well-being.

The brain fog I was experiencing and the lack of mental clarity and focus have all cleared up. I even felt so mentally alert that I undertook a certification program to become a personal trainer -- something that I'd wanted to do for years but never had the energy and focus to do -- and I undertook this after only three months on Dr. Gitterle's program!

I no longer lay in bed for three weeks at a time. I no longer have to take a shower three days before I go somewhere just to have time to recuperate from taking a shower (those who've dealt with chronic fatigue and exhaustion I'm sure can relate!). I could go on, but suffice it to say that I am "alive" again and living my life again. If you've ever suffered from debilitating energy and metabolism issues, you'll understand what this means and why I think this book is so important for achieving optimal health.

It works. It's affordable. It's easy. The change in me has been so pronounced that some of those closest to me have also undertaken the program and have noticed similar results.

Additionally, whenever I've emailed him a question, Dr. Gitterle has answered me promptly, showing true concern and helping and advising me. He's not just an MD and an author, he's a caring human being, and the dissemination of his knowledge has proved priceless to me.

Not Quite Paleo, But more Palatable!
By edcaroleg
After getting a bad ankle wound (that refused to heal) from an accident with my bicycle, I was referred by my PCP to the "Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center" where Dr. Gitterle was the attending physician. Before he came into the examining room, his staff told me about the book he had written. He has made a study of nutrition at the cellular level and its affects on the human body, for his personal benefit and for the benefit of his patients. (He is a specialist in emergency medicine and wound care.)

When I asked him about the book he told me that my wound having not healed properly to that point was due at least in part to my diet. He had treated many patients with chronic wounds that changed their diet to help their wound heal and had stayed with it because it had helped in other ways. He said that his book describes the diet he recommends. In many ways it is similar to the Paleo or the Primal or even to the old Adkins diet, but permits a limited use of some dairy products provided there are no allergies. He calls it the Synergy Matrix diet.

We bought the book and both my wife and I started the diet. We have been on it about a month. Neither of us really needed to lose weight, she has not lost any, and feels great! I have lost over 10 pounds. More important to me, I have lost a lot of strength during my weight workouts even after supplementing my diet with extra protein (whey and hemp.) I have to get used to eating additional fat which along with very low carbohydrates is central to this diet. I'm hoping that in time I will regain my strength. In the meantime I am looking a bit slimmer!
