About the Author
Charles R. MacCluer is Professor of Mathematics and director of the industrial mathematics program at Michigan State University. His first interest was algebraic number theory but later turned to the more practical disciplines of control theory, signal processing, building science, and industrial problems. He is the author of "Industrial Mathematics, Boundary Value Problems and Fourier Expansions," and "Calculus of Variations."

Sweet and Thorough little survey of Applied Math...

For this Dover edition at $10, this little classic from 2000 has been revised in 2010 with corrections from a decade of comments. The format is to introduce the math first, then give practical applications with numerous exercises, examples, and selected solutions (about half) in Appendix B.

You can buy whole 370 page books like this on EACH of the topics here (eg: Applied Integral transforms as in: Integral Transforms for Engineers (SPIE Press Monograph Vol. PM66), used to be $80, now used for $30). However, MacCluer does a superb job of covering a very wide range of problems from signal processing to construction, manufacturing, finance and econ, and a number of topics in business as well as engineering (quant analysis stuff like cueing, simplex, linear programmming, etc.). There isn't a lot on Laplacians, but there is an excellent chapter on Fast Fourier Transforms, for example.

ODEs and PDEs are covered well, but of course dropped down to difference equation solution methods for both fast practical shortcuts and for using MatLab. There is even a couple little chapters at the end to show you how to write your report and present it-- which shows how much the author cares that you succeed-- he's not done this to show off his prowess, but for a refresher, self study, or new ideas in applying new shortcuts and Matlab to practical industrial problems. Of course the signal processing and electronics sections are particularly well done because that's his field.

General Dover: Dover editions pre-1990 (like the '60's/'70's/'80's) obviously don't mention one key detail: the web. THIS ONE does because of 2000/2010 update, and in fact even uses Matlab solutions. But here's a strange twist: a professor/buddy a couple doors down is Chinese with an Engineering PhD from MIT, and works in our Payroy group with China on royalties. He told me that Chinese technical schools are ordering PRE internet Dover editions, even in ENGLISH, specifically because of the quality of the underlying math WITHOUT the software/web. The logic is that if you "get" the equations, you can later on understand the reasoning UNDER the numerical methods, not just the numerical techniques! Interesting thought.

There are 15 to 20 applied math books we recommend to our technical library purchasing clients, and I have to say, compared to that bunch at $80 to $180, this little $10 gem stands out! How many applied math/engineering texts have a chapter on cost-benefit analysis and lifecycle costs! Fun, if only to break the intensity of the more complex PDEs in the rest of the book! Targeted to practicing pros, nevertheless a great undergrad tool (some math is grad level), and for $10 your very bright AP HS child/grandchild might get some value at least skimming ahead to "what's coming" in the real world if they're into a technical career. Highly recommended, thanks again Dover for CARING about our budgets and parent's budgets struggling to make it as well as get their kids the best education possible.

Good Book, hard for weak math backgrounds

Taking a graduate class using this book. If your math major and are curious how math is applied in different field, this book can do the job. Has many Matlab routines worked up along with some Mathematica or Maple routines. If you never coded before, you will probably struggle to understand the reasoning. Nonetheless, it can be done! Ties many backgrounds together i.e. Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Theory from Calculus, D.E., P.D.E. Some exercises are difficult without the proper background. Many examples provided serve as clues to solve the exercises though. I'm a student of Math and I have learned much studying this book and it has left me with more questions than answers (which is a good thing!).

Vivid and haunting imagery and cause for reflection

Joan Didion's portrait of El Salvador left me with vivid and haunting imagery of daily, commonplace disappearances and murders; of body dumps; of the Metropolitan Cathedral that the late Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero refused to finish, "on the premise that the work of the Church took precedence over its display;" of the ghostlike, dispelled National University ("It's not possible to speak of intellectual life in El Salvador"); of the United States' duplicitous role.
"Any situation can turn to terror. The most ordinary errand can go bad ... There is an endemic apprehension of danger in the apparently benign." Joan Didion makes it possible to imagine living this way, every day, with no escape, surrounded by brutal evidence of violent torture and death everywhere.
By the end of Ms. Didion's narrative, it becomes evident, if the reader did not already have some inkling at the beginning, that "American policy, by accepting the invention of 'communism,' as defined by the right in El Salvador, as a daemonic element to be opposed at even the most draconic cost, had in fact achieved the reverse." "To the right, anyone in the opposition was a communist ... where 'left' may mean, in the beginning, only a resistance to seeing one's family killed or disappeared ... In other words 'anti-communism' was seen, correctly, as the bait the United States would always take."
Reading Ms. Didion's firsthand report of the two weeks she lived in El Salvador in 1982 has made me hungry for more details. Her account is no ranting, "liberal" narrative, despite discussing a highly politically charged topic. It seemed truly a dispassionate observation of a country's life and culture laid to waste--our tax dollars at work. Truly cause for reflection on our government's--and our personal--role and effect on the lives of people with whom we share this earth.

Trageic but handled with the upmost care

Salvador is Didion's account her 2-week trip to El Salvador in 1982, then a country in the early stages of a 12 year brutal civil war. Her opening report describes some of the carnage and the everyday terror Salvadorans experience. The opening report is a vividly disturbing picture of just how cruel we can be to one another. From there Didion describes her encounters with various powerful citizens and American embassy officials, who relate the corruption and the utter confusion that permeates this civil war from the top to the bottom. From these interviews it is fairly plan to see that the Salvadorans and those in charge have become desensitized to the violence and disappearances, and are largely apathetic to any reforms proposed by the government. Yet the terror is still very much with them without abatement. Reconciliation is clearly not on the table and the average citizen has no hope that this war is ending soon. Also, discussed to some extent is the ineffectiveness of the U.S. Foreign policy in the murkiness of the civil war. A war in which our allies are more content with the continuation of this war in order to consolidate power rather than fight over ideological outcome or for a greater purpose. In the wake of needless bloodshed on such a massive scale, all an ambassador can do is work towards small victories like trials before executions and doing everything possible to insure the safety of the citizens in their charge.

Salvador is not a factual history of the war in 1982. It is, however, the war seen through the eyes of a journalist with limited time and resources in country. Bias is inherit in this kind of journalism and time and events told second hand become as fluid as the eye witness accounts. Didion tries to elevate these problems by sprinkling quotes and statements taken from official and vetted sources related to story is she is conveying. It's a one-sided truth, but I have not doubt that it is the truth to Didion. So while it's not a scholarly account of the events taking place in El Salvador in 1982, it is an invaluable piece that gives voice to the experiences and horrific events that shaped the lives of Salvadorans for over a decade.

Advice for other writers: Do not attempt to write like Didion unless your name is Didion. She does things with her sentence structure I didn't think was possible. At no point in my wildest imagination would paragraph sized sentence featuring a colon, a semi-colon, eight commas, and two sets of parentheses come off as anything but a clunky mess. Yet Didion's prose is so smooth and her phrasing so good that I hardly ever took notice of her peculiar style. She spews words onto the page and it comes out as a coherent, well constructed thought. She's a remarkable talent

Joan Didion's book is a reedy, powerful work of nonfiction that explores El Salvador's horrific civil war and the American government's dark involvement with helping certain individuals "to disappear." In this work, Didion travels from "battlefields to body dumps" to uncover what many in the political regime do not want covered. With gun shots echoing in the night, frightened citizens keeping quiet and the fear of imminent bloodshed on the minds of many, Salvador is a classic, true tale of political intrigue, violence and secrecy that is equil to the works of Thomas Hauser's Missing and Ryszard Kapuscinski's Shah of Shahs and The Soccar War(s). I love stories which teach me something. This story teaches a lot. The author obviously has an extensive knowledge of sixties era San Francisco Chinatown and Chinese American culture; and he freely shares that knowledge while weaving an intriguing mystery which had me constantly fudging just one more chapter. A combined good read and pleasant learning experience. I'll be reading more of his books.

I love it when I read a book and it smells and sings. The chinese jars took me by the hand for a visit to misty San Francisco and the republic of Chinatown. I found the glance in the multicultural world of a nation within a city just fascinating. I had the urge to visist San Francisco after reading it. If you are looking for a smokey, hat-on mystery, this is your book.

If you are looking for a "noir-style" mystery, set in San Francisco's Chinatown in the 1960s, read The Chinese Jars. William Gordon starts his story with an obituary of a character who you meet through the eyes of the hero. Finding out that this dearly departed friend was not who he portrayed himself to be leads the main character, newspaper advertising salesman Samuel Hamilton, through a series of adventures in Chinatown. Along the way, Samuel finds out that the Chinese safeguard their money, their documents and their secrets in an herb store filled with jars instead of safe deposit boxes.

William's story makes San Francisco Chinatown an important character in this thriller. For suspense with an exotic twist, check out The Chinese Jars.

William Booth and others started their campaign for social reform in 1888 along with Barnardo. This book reviews the contemporary sources; books, papers, journals and official publications; to produce a picture of how the people in the East of London lived. These were the lowest of the low, the dregs who were punished for sleeping on the streets - even though they had no place to go. Slave labour and sweat houses were rife with conditions we would only now tolerate in dance clubs - packed together and far too hot.
